Be prepared to spend a lot to make the cello playable.

When I was quoted $1,000 locally at two stores for a cello just to begin lessons, I thought I could do better online. I found a cello through Crystal Cello. With any cello you buy, you're going to pay $80-$125 extra for set-up charges (tuning and setting the sound peg inside; installing the bridge), but I had to spend more like $480: $80 - Set-up; $400 - Within a month, I started having trouble, and the cello was in the shop repeatedly as we made adjustments and repairs. Here's all that went wrong: the fingerboard (just black-painted wood, not ebony) warped up into the strings and made the cello unplayable and had to be replaced along with the nut; the post at the bottom had to be loosened so it would slide out of the cello. No complaints about their service or shipping, but the reality is I got the cello and its case for about $225, but now I'm into it for $700. I've still saved money over the locally quoted price, but it has been frustrating having the cello in and out of the... 2/5 JustAThought - See all my reviews This review is from: Crystalcello MC100 Full Size 4/4 Cello with Carrying Bag + Bow + Accessories When I was quoted $1,000 locally at two stores for a cello just to begin lessons, I thought I could do better online. Beautiful Cello--bad strings

What a gorgeous cello! Nice "practice" cello---but it immediately needed new strings, and the pegs won't hold. We're still working on it and after new strings plus some peg dope (thank you Sharmusic.com), the pegs still won't hold the tuned strings. Once we get that settled, tho, it ought to play very nicely. 2/5 Charmaine Mankey (Sunny Southern California) - See all my reviews, June 5, 2010

    Quality

Overall, I am pleased with my new cello, because it came with strings, end pin protector, cello rosin, cello cover, and French bow. I was surprised I did not find any packaged extra strings. I was also surprised to see that some hair came out from the bow very easily, which almost led me to believe that this bow needed re-hairing. It seems that this instrument can produce a good resonating forward sound, which at times have to control by backing the note dynamics off. I was not able to find a logo indicating where this cello was originally made at. The bridge was slightly too high. Because my original plan was to use the instrument in my church only and not professionally, this full-size instrument works very well with me. Thank you! 4/5 Daniel Tsukamoto (Clinton Township, MI) - See all my reviews, March 4, 2009

    Excellent for the price

Let me start off by saying that I have absolutely no experience playing cello, so I don't have a lot of knowledge of the instrument to compare it to.PROS:That being said, I think this is an amazing cello for the price. Considering that most "beginner" cellos in a music store start out around $1,000, finding a cello that sounds good at all for $200 is great. It did make a weird squeaky sound when I played the G string while holding down on the fret, but I started making sure I kept the rosin residue wiped off the string, switched to rather than the rosin that came with it, and started using the bow like I was taught in ... 5/5 Brelywi "Brelywi" - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Completely satisfied customer

I am currently learning to play cello on my own.I was surprised at the quality of the cello for the price,(the bow was very cheap and warped). The tone is awesome, when I play a song the tone sounds exactly like the instrument on the instructional C-D.I Would highly recommend thepurchase of: A new bow, better rosin, the strings included with the cello are just fine.Overall I am very happy with my purchase, and wouldrecommend it to anyone.Keep in mind it is a beginner cello,a great start for someone just starting out, without spending alot of money. 5/5 BROTHER RAT FINK - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) decent quality, you get what you pay for

i was so excited to play my new cello! when i got it i tuned it and cleaned it and played everyday. i played almost 5 hours a week and enjoyed it very much. had a good sound for a student cello and it felt decently made. after a while though i noticed on the back of the bridge towards the neck that there was a little crack. didnt think much of it but after 2 days that crack turned into a huge break and the finger board completley came off. i enjoyed play my first cello and it was time to get one that was of higher quality. i would recomend a new studnet to buy it but i dont know how long it will last. 2/5 stavros - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Grace 4/4 cello

I received this cello on the date it was expected. I was surprised to see if as It was huge! very lightweight but none the less the box was as tall as I am. The package was beaten up a little, I'm sure from the delivery men and how it's handled during the shipping process. Fragile should have been written on the side. The package included the cello, bow, case, stand two sets of string and rosin, and the music stand. I already had a stand so the one that came with it isn't much use to me. However, I LOVE the music stand. It is so much better than the one I had. AS for the cello, it was inside the case when it came with the string kind of attached, but not fully as the bridge was not attached as well. For the best, as it would have gotten broken during shipping. Not a big deal as I had someone set it up for me. I did notice that there is a small crack or separation between the top half and the body, but it's more cosmetic I think than anything. The bow is a fair bow. Great for a beginner

This actually arrived about 5 days earlier than expected. It came in a big box with plenty of Styrofoam to keep it from moving around and packing strips as well as taped tightly shut. There were set up instructions as well as a link to a set up video to watch. All the promised items were there, the rosin, music stand, cello stand, strings, pitch pipe, case, bow and bag. It looks pretty good for the price. I imagine a long time player might snub their nose at this but for someone like myself who is on a budget, wants to get a start and intends to save up for a better one once I improve it's the perfect instrument to start with. What to expect: A large box with shipping tape and straps about 5 1/2 feet long and about 1 foot width by 1/2 or so width. You'll need scissors and a blade to get inside. Once opened there are Styrofoam shapes fitted around the Cello which is in it's case. The Music stand is in it's own separate case. Great Cello Package

I must say, I was fairly surprised when I my doorbell was rang by the FedEx guy three days before my cello was supposed to arrive.I was even more surprised when I saw the quality of the cello itself. Granted, there are a few blemishes--the sound holes and tuning peg holes had splinters of wood still in them, giving them a really rough appearance, and there are a few blisters and imperfections (and, in some places, it didn't get covered at all, such as inside the gear box. This is my first cello, so in all honesty, I have no idea if it's supposed to be like that or not) in the varnish. That said, however, this is a fantastic cello. It sounds much better than I anticipated, though I don't think the bow is of the highest quality around. Still, it gets the job done, and for the price, it's awesome. All in all, other than the minor cosmetic stuff, this is a great package. Pretty nice =D

The tailpiece comes on the cello disconnected as well as the bridge, but the cello is beautiful and has a very nice color and shine.I absolutely adore the metronome and stand it comes with. The cases are nice, too; the hard foam-like one has a lock and little key, along with rolling wheels so you don't have to carry it on your back or hold it off the ground.I only saw one extra set of strings, but that works for me; there's a set on the cello itself. The fingerboard, scroll, and pegs are a good quality wood. The bow looked nice, but I haven't really checked it out 100% yet.Overall, I was very satisfied to receive this cello for the price. For a novice cello player, I absolutely love it.

The cello was better than expected for a learner's cello. The accessories that it comes with were awesome (everything you need to get started). Setting up the cello was a bit scary for me as I have never done it on my own before. As long as you follow the instructions that comes with the cello and go super slow, it will be no problem to set it up on your own. Just remember it will take quite a while to set it up the first time. 4/5 Harley - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Fabulous Instrument

I just got this instrument about 20 minutes before the UPS was going to close which was nice but anyways, just utterly fabulous instrument, what you get is all you need. No need for super sensitive strings or anything and the bow is more than good enough for this packaged price. I took the instrument out and UNLIKE OTHERS used my brain and wondered why would they not set the bridge? hmmm MAYBE TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE AMAZING INSTRUMENT. So i set the bridge pretty easily with help from my mom since i didn't feel comfortable tightening the strings on the finger board and just slipped the bridge in the center the the f-holes, you'll notice little notches in the center on the f-holes and just put the bridge their but remember to place it a bit closer to the soundpost which is on the left side of the instrument and also tilt the bridge a bit backwards so when you tighten the strings it doesn't bend the bridge. So then i rosined the bow for about 20 minutes and tried the instrument. Pure... 4/5 A. Nekic "Death is only an extension of life" (Eastlake, OH) - See all my reviews, December 29, 2009

    Have it inspected immediately

I bought this last year and didn't get a chance to really try it out for a couple of months later because I was moving - I really should have returned it and spent the money for a decent cello. The price is good considering all that is comes with. You won't find a better package deal. However, if you are not familiar with the cello, have someone who is familiar test it and look it over up and down - they should play it and inspect the parts. The bridge it came with was not the right size, so I had to pay $150 to get a proper one. The nut was also not properly sized so I had to pay another $50 to have it fixed. The sound also leaves something to be desired. The finishing is a sloppy if you look closely and a section started cracking off on one side after 3 months of use.The bow is alright. The hard case it comes with is very fragile and the straps broke and the lining was coming undone within weeks. The wheels are poorly placed so it wobbles... 2/5 K. FANTASTIC!

Cello came 4 days early in a beautiful hard case! It was my first time ever touching a cello and the bridge was extremely simple to assemble. The cello is absolutely beautiful and very well made, perfect for anyone~ The sound is very smooth and lovely. I recommend this very much! I will definitely be buying from Cecilio again~ 5/5 CamaroSheila (CT, USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Cello came 4 days early in a beautiful hard case! Can't beat it for the price

I bought this cello about 18 months ago. I've been a musician for over 20 years, but this is my first cello. Since I didn't know if the instrument would be right for me I decided to go inexpensive. The fact that it came with a second set of strings, "hard" foam case, soft case, stand, rosin and a bow, I thought this was quite a steal. You get what you pay for, it's true. This is no orchestra instrument by any means. But for a beginner it is a heck of a deal. If mine broke I'd either buy this one again or one of the step up models (CCO-400 or 500 series) as I probably wouldn't allow myself to spend over 1k on any other student model, at least until I'm only using it for studying and doing some home recording. 4/5 RBelomo (Massachusetts) - See all my reviews This review is from: Cecilio 4/4CCO-300 Rosewood Fitted Solid Wood Cello with Hard and Soft Case, Bow, Rosin, Bridge, Strings and Stand (Full Size) I bought this cello about 18 months ago. Beautiful finish but needs better quality control on important parts

Overall we are happy with this cello but, it is not without a few problems that had to be corrected right out of the box - before it could be played.Got this for Christmas 2010 for our daughter who is in her third year of orchestra. It arrived quickly and without damage; all the required parts were included (hard & soft cases, extra strings, rosen, stand, etc). Once opened we found that the bridge was not the correct one for this particular cello model; it was too short and allowed the strings to rest on areas that they shouldn't. It did not lift the strings high enough that they could be plucked. (I am not a cello expert so please forgive the lack of technical terms.) She took it to her teacher and he recommended a local lady that he knows to make repairs/adjustments. We took it to this great little old lady; she told us the Cecilio brand is relatively new and sometimes their quality control isn't what it should be. But, she said overall they are good for... 4/5 L. M. Hillis (San Angelo, TX) - See all my reviews, February 2, 2011

    So far, So good

After years of appreciating cello music, I decided to give the instrument a shot myself. The unit arrived unscathed in a large cardboard box. The bridge setup wasn't too difficult, however, tuning took some time -- still not sure if it's proper yet. From an amateur's perspective, this seems to be a fine instrument. I look forward to advancing in skill. 4/5 Chris - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Brazil wood bow

Great product for a fantastic price! I have played cello for 15 years. My last brazil wood bow broke in a dissapoining moving accident and I have since had to use my backup fiber glass bow. I found this one on and hesitated to purchase, normally preferring to try a product before buying. But the price was too good to beat, worth the risk. I am thouroughly pleased with this gamble!! The seller packed the item very well, allowing this very fragile item to arrive in pristine condition. Thank u!! 5/5 Indianasarah - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Doubted at first, but excellent now!

I was moving from a beginners cello to intermediate, so my teacher borrowed a couple of quality items. One being a $136 bow, in comparison to the starter bow it blew me away. But! I wasn't willing to pay $136 for a bow, so I purchased this. When I saw the $136 at side with the $30 (both brazilwood) I figured it was a bad purchase. The hairs weren't as cleanly bleached, and the bow's bend was unnaturally high up.But after showing my teacher (without the price mention) she indicated it met the quality of the one she picked out(bringing out more sound on my cello than hers it seemed). When mentioning the price tag she was very impressed and said it was a great deal. I must say I have to agree, the way it balances in my hand is a little more comfortable than the one she picked out(which had a smaller frog and was a little lighter).Spare $100 went you Larsen A and D, the A was definitely worth it =) 5/5 Matthew - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) WOW

I am a beginner celist and I was using a horrible bow made out of plastic and synthetic hair; the one that came with my rental. Boy, am I glad I bought this bow... Real wood and horsehair, great quality, it feels very good while playing. I'd recommend this to any beginner. 5/5 Virginia Victorio "Book's lover" (Caguas, PR) - See all my reviews, June 8, 2012

    Set D'Addario Helicore Cello Strings

I asked a professional cellist for cello string recommendations and also where I could get the best prices online. He recommended these strings for me and cited some popular suppliers he thought had good prices. I looked at their prices and decided to see if Amazon even carried these. I was happily surprised to see they did AND at a lower price than any other place I searched. I thought I might have to wait longer for delivery but order came in 1 week! 5/5 NY Gal (NY) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Love the G and C strings

This is the first time I've tried Helicore Strings. The two lower strings have a warm, full sound and respond quickly. However, the A string is so thin that I literally cut my finger on it! It sounds thin and wirey. The D string is somewhat better. The next time I need strings I will purchase the C and G Helicore only. 4/5 Karen Ahramjian - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) The problem isn't the strings, it's the packaging

First, let me say there's nothing wrong with these strings: they seem to be of good quality. On the other hand, I've just returned the second set I received. I was expecting an A, a C, a D, and a G. The first set came with 1 G and 3 A strings. The replacement set (which Amazon next-day shipped at no charge in order for them to be here for Christmas, I love Amazon's service) came with 1 G, 1 A, no D and *2* Cs. The strings didn't look as though they'd been used, just packaged incorrectly to start with. It shouldn't be this hard to get one of each kind in a cello set! I'm hoping my next set will be a correct.Update: On the third try, we received a correct set (which had obviously been checked over before being sent). The strings themselves respond very evenly to pressure and we're now quite happy with the purchase. The A and B strings have a nice clear tone, perhaps not as clear as some more expensive strings, but very nice for the price. And I've nothing but praise... 4/5 K. Doughty "Kathy in S.B." They are Clear Bags!

Wow, I'd love to go on and on about how bags are bags, but these bags are just that.... BAGS! They did the job of a bag admirably. Be warned they do have a bit of crinkle-ness about them.
