0 5/5 RoyStereo - See all my reviews This review is from: Ernie Ball 2833 Hybrid Slinky Nickel Wound Bass Set (45 - 105) (Electronics) As i titled my review, this string set is as good as the expensive ones, plus it has that particular punchy, fat, clear sound that everyone loves. I am not only a bass player but also a string dealer. Because of this I had the opportunity to test a wide range of brands, materials, gauges, etc. Ernie ball have something that the other ones don't. Unbelievable Strings

I purchased a set of 4 for my bass in 1990. It was just a old Fender Pbass with stock pickups. The bass imediatly had a deeper sound and nicer feel. The strings rang longer and stayed in tune for outstanding periods of time. I had the medium-lights. Now for the pure comedy. The strings outlasted my bass. Yes that is right... the strings were still in good condition and still holding their tone for an entire gig in Jan 2006. 1 set of these lasted me 16years. My Pbass broke just beneath the neck in the body and I am finally going to give up the ghost and buy another set of strings for a bass... There is imediatly no doubt in my mind as to which set to buy. I went through 5 sets of strings in 3 years due to them shredding near joints and then these lasted me 16 YEARS... Value.. Sound... Tone... Tunning... I had bandmates tell me to replace my strings since they knew how old they were and then I would hand my bass over and say play.. then they would say.. um nevermind.. by God... 5/5 Mac75 "Cp" (Troy MI) - See all my reviews This review is from: Dean Markley Blue Steel 4-String ML 2674 Bass Guitar Strings (.045-.105) (Electronics) I purchased a set of 4 for my bass in 1990. Best sounding, playing strings I have found for my Rickenbacker 4003!

I own 10 bass guitars and use a variety of DR string models on all of them. One of my favorite DR sets is their Sunbeams, which I use on all of my short scale basses. I was looking for something with a coating to try on my 4003 and had read good things about these Black Beauty strings which I discovered are basically coated Sunbeams, just like the other DR coated strings like the Red Devils!Prior to swtitching over to these I had been running with DR Lo-Riders on my 4003 which I also use on my Fender Jazz Basses. Contrary to the nice top end bite I get from these on my 62 and 73 Jazz, I just wasn't getting the classic RIC tone I wanted out of the 4003 with LO-Riders installed, so this is why I decided to give these a try.I had been running with DR Red Devils on my Fender Jaguar and my Gretch DuoJet for a long time so I already knew that these coated DRs have a great tone, reduced fret clatter and easy on the fingers to boot, so I already knew there was a... 5/5 The Resident Gourmet (California) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Short version: These strings are incredible. Why haven't you bought them yet?Long version:Oh my goodness, wow. I absolutely love these strings. I even love how they have red cloth wrapping on the end of the string up by the headstock. The tone of these strings? To die for. These are the best bass strings I have ever used.Tone:Some words to describe the tone are as follows: biting, growling, aggressive, articulate, and bright. These strings were made for players who want to be heard, who want to cut through the mix. These strings have great low end, but that's not the impressive part. What's so impressive about these strings is that when a note is played, the combination of midrange and high harmonics give the tone a metallic, almost piano-like quality. Good for slap bass? Goodness yes.Versatility:These strings may be bright and audacious, but they can also be tamed by simply turning down the tone knob... 5/5 Adam Hilliard - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Rotosound RS66LF Swing Bass 66 Stainless Steel Bass Guitar Strings (45 65 85 105) (Electronics) I'm just a rank amateur and an old geezer, but I've been looking for the right string to give me that traditional P bass tone, not too muddy or too bright. I've played flat wound strings for years, but lately my ears have heard their tone as muddy and when I tried turning my tone up on either the guitar or amp to get more clarity the G string would ring too bright, even when using foam at my bridge. So after reading reviews I decided to give these a try. Perfect tone and balance on all strings. After playing flats for so long I'm having to be more disciplined to avoid string squeak, but that's actually a good thing and my playing and technique have improved as a result. Getting the tone I want is certainly worth the effort. My old bass guitar never sounded better.Trying different strings to get the tone you want is far cheaper than buying a new bass. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , June 13, 2014

Consistently great strings, even if they are a bit more expensive

Over the last 10 years or so, I've been pretty obsessive about trying out new gear - amps, instruments, effects, etc - always wondering if there's something better for me out there. As I've evolved as a player, my tastes have also changed a bit.I've been with DR Hi-Beams for a while now, though, and usually only buy another brand if I'm in a pinch (got a show tonight and I forgot to buy new strings, that kind of thing). Here are some reasons I prefer these strings over your run-of-the-mill roundwounds:First of all, I personally cannot tell a difference in sound or feel between most strings of similar gauge and materials. D'Addario, GHS, Ernie Ball, etc all have their standard nickel roundwound strings, and they all sound and feel the same. DRs are different, though, and I suspect this is due to their round-core construction. The majority of strings out there are constructed with a hexagonal core. A round core makes the string a bit more flexible and appears to... 5/5 Andrew Hagler - See all my reviews, July 17, 2012

    These strings are the best

I am a huge fan of complex tone, a la Chris Squire, Pete Townshend, Les Claypool, etc.For the gauge of the string, they are actually MORE flexible under the fingers than thinner strings by other brands (like the Ernie Ball misnomer "super slinky" ), and they have punchy highs and midrange over tones that give you that piano-string-like clarity to cut through the wash of distorted guitars, crashing cymbals and pretty much anything else, and give your bass tone independence and clarity in the mix.The strings have such high output, I find with my set up, when I really dig in, I can even get soft clipping distortion like Chris Squire gets running his split signal through a guitar amp. When I was in my teens, I tried out a bunch of other brands, like GHS bass boomers, and Dean Markley Blue Steels. Nothing compares to DR's quality, sound, complexity of tone, amplitude, and the length of life.My last set I put on while recording an album with... 5/5 A. Fantastic!! DR Hi-beams are my go-to, gotta' have'm bass strings!!

I've played, recorded and performed with nearly every bass string out there. For me the DR Hi Beams are the absolute best string I have used - Period. They have a great, flexible feel, sound fantastic with plenty of high-end bite, a nice smooth mid presence and a deep, satisfying low-end and they stay in tune extremely well. They also last a reasonably long time for this "I ruin strings 1/2 way through a set" bassist. Anyway, strings are a very subjective item, so I cannot promise these will be loved by everyone. But if you're looking for a great set of SS bass strings and have not tried Hi Beams yet, please do so. One warning: Because Hi-Beams are wound on a round core, they must be bent at the end before you cut them. DR includes an insert to explain this in detail. Please follow these instructions or your strings will sound and feel dead and lifeless. Also, make it a point to wind them up to pitch slower than you normally might. If you follow these two suggestions, you'll at least... 5/5 David B Hunter - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) 0 5/5 B. Santora - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Ernie Ball 2221 Regular Slinky Nickel Wound Set (10 - 46) (Electronics) I just turned 60 years old and I've been playing guitar since I was 13 - I've tried every make of string, and played most every model of guitar as well, and these are the only strings I use. I recently bought a used guitar which was strung with something else - couldn't wait to get the EB strings on there. Nothing else has the feel and sound - they just have a musicality and aliveness to them and manufacturing quality has been consistent over the years. I'd recommend these for any guitar, any style - harmonics, sustain, feel - they have it all. Only decision is .010's or .009's - I like to use .010's when tuned down to E flat, and .009's for standard tuning. If you don't like your guitar and it's strung with other strings, try these. 0 5/5 Cal (USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Ernie Ball 2221 Regular Slinky Nickel Wound Set (10 - 46) (Electronics) In my opinion strings are the hardest thing to rate to an extent because everyone prefers different tensions and/or sounds but I will say that as long as you clean them once in a while they will last pretty long without major tone loss, as far as tension that all depends on the person playing. I've been using these for about 3 years now and I wouldn't swear by them but they are more readily available than a lot of other strings. I've used a lot of gauges from .09-.42 all the way to .12-.54 and what's comfortable for me may not be for you. I would definitely recommend a lighter gauge to beginners and my personal favorite is either the .10-.46 or the .10-.48 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , August 29, 2013
