The Bass Handbook

Creator: Adrian Ashton | Music - 2006

Try a restring with a set of nickel bass strings followed by a restring with a set of stainless steel bass strings if you want to hear how each material works on your set-up. Remember, you can tailor the sound of your bass massively with a change ...

Publisher: Hal Leonard Corporation

About this book
This indispensable handbook helps players of all levels produce better, more creative, and more varied bass lines. Divided into two sections - Playing Your Bass and Knowing Your Bass - it covers everything from tuning, reading music, scales and chords, and advanced techniques to tips on buying and upgrading a budget bass and troubleshooting. Along with a list of suggested listening and reference guide, this book provides an unrivalled digest of bass information that might otherwise take an entire career to amass. It begins with a 'Basics' section that assumes nothing about your ability. 'Scales and Chords' shows you how to add other notes to your bass lines and includes exercises to extend musical knowledge and train your ear. It develops your understanding of the links between chords and scales, helping you to play from a chord chart or to improvise when required. Most of the ideas and techniques can be achieved without reading music at all, although the information is there for those who can. The 'Reading music' section develops an intuitive approach using pattern recognition rather than the usual mechanical (counting) method, and introduces a skill that may eventually become important to your professional career. Advanced techniques includes harmonics and fretless bass.

    Great strings

5/5 Scott - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Fender 9050 Stainless Flatwound Bass Strings (Electronics) I have a 30 year old epiphone accubass that I love to play. Flat wound has always been my favorite because I can slide up and down the strings and get that "WOW" sound without the string noise. I always felt that the bright sound loss from flats could be compensated with the amp. These Fender strings are the brightest flats I have used and the sustain is much longer. For the "round wound" fans that want the "flats" ease to play TRY THESE. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , May 9, 2014

    The missing link...

5/5 CJBass - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Fender Nylon Bass Guitar Strings, Light (Electronics) I bought my '77 jazz bass just over a year ago and after several tweaks and upgrades I really liked it's tone. However, I still didn't love it. The throaty snarl that my hero's J Basses had still eluded me. Someone suggested I try Fender Tapes a while ago but I've used Labella tapewounds on my fretless for years and while they have a nice upright type "plunk", there is little resembling growl. The main reason I tried these strings is because I figured for $20 I didn't have much to lose. I put these on during my lunch break the day they arrived and wow, huge mistake. I was so amazed by the sound I ended being late returning to work. This is the sound I've been hearing in my dreams. The tonal range of my bass is incredible with these on it. From low and mellow to full on snarl it is truly incredible how these have unleashed my four string beast. The feel is incredible too. I'll never buy anything else as long Fender makes these. I'd give 10 stars if I could. Nuff Said!!! Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , January 2, 2015

Like Meyatch, I think the tone of these things ...

Like Meyatch, I think the tone of these things leaves a little to be desired. My main strings are Rotosound roundwounds, which in my opinion have a more balanced sound with more grunt at the bottom end. These Fenders seem to have a bit of bloom in the upper mids. I'm waiting for them to dull out with steady use over time, hoping that bloom will go away. But, some perspective: First, no one in any audience will ever know the difference. Second, any differences can be eq'd out if the person at the console knows what he's doing. Third, in most mixes, that upper-mid range should be eq'd out anyway because it trespasses up into slots that belong to other instruments. (Who wants a congested mix? Not me.) Fourth, most live-sound systems, whether because of quality or the levels they're run at or both, are going to mask any differences between string sets of reasonably good quality. Fifth, most rooms are awful sound-wise, and that, too, will mask any differences... 4/5 Craig (New Hampshire) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) The result is a string with bright highs and a thunderous low end.
Super bass 7250's are installed at the factory on all Fender us and Mexico basses.
They are particularly good for rock, funk, and any style in which the bass needs to cut through.
Fender super bass 7250's combine the high output and dynamic sound of steel with the smooth feel of nickel.
Fender super bass 7250's are an excellent all-purpose bass string.

    Best Guitar Strings in Existence

5/5 B. Santora - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Ernie Ball Regular Slinky Nickel Wound Set, .010 - .046 (Electronics) I just turned 60 years old and I've been playing guitar since I was 13 - I've tried every make of string, and played most every model of guitar as well, and these are the only strings I use. I recently bought a used guitar which was strung with something else - couldn't wait to get the EB strings on there. Nothing else has the feel and sound - they just have a musicality and aliveness to them and manufacturing quality has been consistent over the years. I'd recommend these for any guitar, any style - harmonics, sustain, feel - they have it all. Only decision is .010's or .009's - I like to use .010's when tuned down to E flat, and .009's for standard tuning. If you don't like your guitar and it's strung with other strings, try these. It's all about what YOU feel

5/5 Clint (USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Ernie Ball Regular Slinky Nickel Wound Set, .010 - .046 (Electronics) In my opinion strings are the hardest thing to rate to an extent because everyone prefers different tensions and/or sounds but I will say that as long as you clean them once in a while they will last pretty long without major tone loss, as far as tension that all depends on the person playing. I've been using these for about 3 years now and I wouldn't swear by them but they are more readily available than a lot of other strings. I've used a lot of gauges from .09-.42 all the way to .12-.54 and what's comfortable for me may not be for you. I would definitely recommend a lighter gauge to beginners and my personal favorite is either the .10-.46 or the .10-.48 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , August 29, 2013

they feel great on my fingers

5/5 Andy and Susan (Florida, USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Ernie Ball Regular Slinky Nickel Wound Set, .010 - .046 (Electronics) I was looking for a good deal on replacement guitar strings, and thought I would try out the Ernie Ball Regular Slinky Nickel Wound Set, .010 - .046. I'm not a guitarist, but I pick up the guitar every once and a while. So I have not become a brand snob. But after trying out these Ernie Balls, I may just stick with them. The price is good, the quality seems well made, and they feel great on my fingers. They installed quick and easily into my guitar. My guitar is a neckless design, and these worked great in them. They did not slip loose while tightening, and have been able to hold their toon while playing. Is there anything else you could ask for out of guitar strings? 4/5 Amazon Customer (Dover, MA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Pixnor String Action Ruler Gauge Tool for Guitar Bass Easily scratched. Probably not super-accurate, but certainly good enough. If you only do occasional set-ups, it's probably fine, and it is a good buy for the price.
