About this book
For over 170 years the C.F. Martin company has produced some of the finest flat-top acoustic guitars in the world. Martin's designs for the shape and construction of these instruments have influenced virtually every other manufacturer, and the flat-top guitar as we know it today is essentially the same as that established by Martin in the 1850s. At one time or another Martin's guitars have driven the sound of every kind of popular music, from country to pop, from bluegrass to rock 'n' roll, and with the current resurgence of acoustic music, Martin's premier guitars are once more finding a new generation of enthusiastic musicians. The Martin Book is a fresh view of this extraordinary guitar maker, pulling together many strands of musical and manufacturing lore into a fascinating whole that illuminates Martin's long and varied history. Dozens of specially commissioned full-color photographs show every kind of Martin model, some of which come from Martin's own unique collection. Meticulous listings for collectors and enthusiasts simplify the identification of Martin instruments and detail virtually every guitar that the company has produced since the early 1830s.

Hawaiian Koa Uke at a Good Price

When I purchased my Martin C1K Concert Ukulele, it was supposed to be a substitute for the T2K I had on order for the longest time. I had meant to trade the C1K, or sell it, but when the time came, I couldn't part with it. I have several really fine ukuleles 4 times the cost, but this C1K is my favorite, even with the Martin strings it came with. As to strings, I do have a set of my favorite "Living Water" strings, as well as "Aquila" strings, waiting to try, but just can't do it until the Martins on there go completely flat. I also bought some Martin strings for backups in case I can't beat them!I can't promise all the C1K's will be like mine. I do know mine has unusually figured Koa, enough to draw comments from the sellers, so who knows if that affects the sound. I also have to believe they all sound better than average, and play better than average, and that that will only improve over time . . . they are Martins, even if they are made in Mexico.If... 5/5 H. Surprisingly good ukulele, and a huge step up from entry-level for a great price.

My wife got me this uke for Christmas after I mentioned in passing that I wanted to upgrade from my old Mitchell ukulele. The C1K has all solid koa top, back, and sides. The neck appears to be mahogany and the the bridge and fretboard look to be rosewood. The neck has a slim taper to it that is a bit slimmer than other uke necks. I realize now that this is one feature that makes it more playable for me. There is a smooth satin finish on the neck that lets your hand slide freely to each chord position. There is not much else in the way of decoration on this uke, other than a very handsome raised gold foil Martin logo on the headstock. It is a modest look, but being an owner of a Martin 15-series acoustic guitar as well, I have come to love this stripped-down approach to aesthetics. The gig bag it comes with is a good quality TKL bag, but it is fairly stripped down and I would consider it "light duty" since there is almost zero padding. Amazing instrument, amazing value

I shopped Ukes in Hawaii in December. And, as you might imagine, there are some great instruments out there. But they all seemed to have trade-offs; not the least of which was price with the nice solid Koa ukes running $900 and up. I ended up buying a solid mahogany uke off of Craig's List in Honolulu. It is nice, has nice tone, plays nice. Then, back on the mainland, we decided to get my mom an uke for Christmas. The end of the story is that we ordered the C1K. I am a Martin guitar lover, so it was an easy gamble. The uke arrived promptly--about a week. It comes with a nice gig bag and was packaged well. The delivery guy was very jealous. The uke is visually beautiful. The wood grains were pronounced with warm tones of browns and crème. But it is the ring of the uke and the playability that made me go WOW. This instrument played as well or better than some priced twice as much. I plan on buying a tenor for myself when my stringed-instrument slush fund recovers... 5/5 Randy Harrington (EUGENE, OREGON, US) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Finding the right string match for an ukulele...

0 4/5 daniel talioaga (san leandro, calif.) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: D'Addario EJ65C Pro-Arté Custom Extruded NylonUkulele Strings, Concert (Electronics) Very nice match to the concert uke I had in mind to put on. Previous strings buzzed and rattled and sounded somewhat harsh (but some of that is just because it was time to change strings).. These D'Adarrio strings have a bright, clear tone and have a nice feel to them. An interesting alternative to nylgut strings. Please note that string choice is somewhat arbitrary and personal. I've tried 2 other string sets on this uke and these strings presently have the sound and feel I'd like from this particular instrument. Having said that I'm still impressed with these Pro-Arte' Custom strings on my concert as well as other different types of D'Addario Strings which I have fitted on my Tenor and Baritone and banjo ukuleles. 0 4/5 Rad5030 - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: D'Addario EJ53T Pro-Arté Rectified Ukulele Strings, Tenor Ukulele/Hawaiian (Electronics) These are different. Kind of hard on the finger tips but will assist in building up the callouses...The sound is different that Martin's and Aquila's which may be a little more mellow....but the price is great. I would recommend you to give a set a try! They break in much faster than Aquila's which take what seems forever to stay in tune and are different with the one wound string...can't really figure out the reason for that though...Pro'sInexpensiveCon'sTough on the fingers....but will build them up... 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , June 11, 2015
