Creator: Anne Rice | 1999-09-07

The demonic ghost of a Russian aristocrat uses his magic violin to enchant the exquisite Triana and transport her to a terrifying realm where they join a battle of wills, in an evocative tale of seduction. Reprint.

About this book
In the grand manner of Interview with the Vampire, Anne Rice's new novel moves across time and the continents, from nineteenth-century Vienna to a St. Charles Greek Revival mansion in present-day New Orleans to dazzling capitals of the modern-day world, telling a story of two charismatic figures bound to each other by a passionate commitment to music as a means of rapture, seduction, and liberation.

    Great first time violin

My 12 year old daughter wanted a violin just out of the blue. Violins can be very expensive, yet being able to purchase a new one with colors to choose from for a fickle 12 year old girl at this price was an easy decision. The package came quick with everything expected, and the violin was not cheaply made. Yes if she ever learns to play, most likely she'll gravitate to one that will cost more, but for the money every parent can afford to by their kids an instrument to keep them interested in music and learning to play. 5/5 Randy The Painter - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Not quite worth the price, but still good. It'd be a better deal if it was $10-20 cheaper.

Okay... where to start.... Mainly I'm giving the accessories 2 stars... the violin itself, compared to other starter violins, isn't bad. It's got like 4-5 stars. It's got a low score b/c I have to replace parts in order to play. If the strings were slightly more durable, it'd have 4 stars, no doubt.:::NOTE:::Walking into this I knew it was meant to be a starter violin and wasn't expecting high quality by any means. I just wanted to get one to see if I had a knack for it, and to have one to goof around on. I expected the strings to be crap, however I expected them to last me through a few sessions. I was expecting to have to buy new rosin, so I bought some super sensitive light rosin in advance. I also expected to need to buy a better bow & shoulder rest in a few months.PROS:The sound post (the dowel rod inside the violin itself) was in place, and wasn't rolling around. The bridge was easy to put on.It wasn't too difficult to tune the... 2/5 Corenaccio - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) I up graded the string, set the bridge, use some peg drops and this violin sounds great, looks great. The bow, shoulder rest is good and the case great. Very nice and will be used by my granddaughter. I actually enjoy playing it. :>)For $58.00 it was a very good deal. The upgraded strings were $30.00 plus updated the tail piece for $18.00 to hold the higher tension of the strings. So for $116.00 we have a very nice sounding violin. The chinrest is good, the pegs work well. Very pleased. No one should buy an inexpensive Chinese violin without upgrading the strings and possible the tailpiece but after that they generally sound as good or if not better than violin 3 -4 time more money. 4/5 NJ - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great student violin!

I am a violin teacher at a local private school. I told my violin students just to buy a cheap violin in order to see if it was something they really wanted to stick with. Several of my students selected the Palatino violin. I think they are great for a student violin. After the first couple of weeks they have kept their tune very well and are pretty easy to tune. The bridge seems to stay in place pretty well also. I would highly reccomend this to a new student. They are better than the other violins the other students have. 5/5 S. Great item

We love the violin. It came with so many items that we were quite surprised. The tuning of the violin for the first week was tough. I think it just needed to be broken in. Now it works great. Her violin instructor is also impressed with the quality and sound. The price was fantastic for all that you get. A nice starter violin

I bought this for my 9 year-old and have not been disappointed. I was worried that for the price the instrument might not hold up, but it has done well. The only negative comment I have is that the pegs move a little too easily and don't hold their pitch as well as I would like. I also bought her a nicer bow, which made a big difference in her sound. Overall, a fine beginner instrument. 4/5 S. Ferguson - See all my reviews, April 29, 2010

    Not a very good instrument

I bought this a couple of years ago not knowing anything about violins. The finger board is slanted toward the violin (not normal according to my teacher who plays professionally), the strings are very close together it doesn't even compare to my teacher's violin with string spacing, the A string will not stay in tune to play an entire song. It is now a toy for the kids to play with. 1/5 E. Sterling - See all my reviews, December 2, 2011

    Won't fall off the violin

We have been Kun users for many years, it's widely known and recommended by many teachers. While the fits with Kun has been flexible and comfortable, it breaks too easily and it's not able to grab on to the violin after a while, constantly falls off and causes a lot of frustration for children. I learned about the everest shoulder rest quite accidentally, and decided to give it a try after 3 Kun shoulder rests had either broke in the middle of the body or the legs bent/broke in a year. The fit for this shoulder rest works out great and is comfortable, the best part are the legs! They grab on to the violin firmly and never fall off from the violin! 5/5 buyer - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great shoulder rest at a reasonable price

The Everest shoulder rest works great for me. I have had problems with other shoulder rests falling offon a couple of my fiddles that have a narrow overhang on the back. The Everest stays put..... I have neverhad that problem since I started using it over a year ago. I have since turned a lot of fiddlers as wellas well as violinists on to the Everest who were having similar problems and they all have said that ithas worked well for them too. Awesome

I've been playing violin for seven years and I had used a KUN shoulder rest for some time, but it always fell off. This shoulder rest is super comfortable because the foam is thicker than on the KUN and it NEVER falls off. Also, the legs that grip the violin don't scratch it at all and grip the violin better. I've been using it for a while and I'm really happy with it. 5/5 F. GAAB - See all my reviews, December 16, 2012

    An excellent product, solidly made

I am a former professional violinist, and I still play a lot. I have used Wolf Forte Primo shoulder rests exclusively for over twenty-five years. They are extremely comfortable, highly adjustable to pretty much any physique, stay reliably on the instrument, are very well made, and fold up small for storage in the violin case. They are used by thousands upon thousands of professional violinists every day. I have never heard a complaint about their quality, and I can only assume that the negative review below is based either because the person got a lemon (very rare - I've never seen one), or somehow put it together wrong (I can't imagine how, though - it's very easy). I personally find the Wolf Forte Primo superior to the competition in all aspects. The only drawback used to be that on the old models the rubber that comes into contact with the violin was black and over time would leave black "skid marks" on the violin. But Wolf corrected this problem years ago by switching to a... 5/5 Hans U. Widmaier "Uli" (Elmhurst, IL USA) - See all my reviews, December 28, 2007

The BEST shoulder rest I'd ever had

This is the best! For almost the price of a Kun, not only its height can be adjusted to the highest possible among the various brands (up to 3 inches!), the padded-metal bar can be BENT to fit the contours of your shoulder! I spent an hour bending and trying out various heights and angles, and the result is an amazing fit! (I will still continue to explore to see if I can improve the shape further.) Storage in the violin case, however, may be a problem if you wish to preserve the shape as the legs still occupy considerable space even after being collapsed. Nonetheless, because it fits perfectly to your shoulder after the adjustments, this shoulder rest is very very comfortable and stable, and it's a customised shoulder rest that is truly yours and yours only! 5/5 Earthroamer "Roamer" (Singapore) - See all my reviews This review is from: Wolf Forte Primo 3/4 - 4/4 Violin Shoulder Rest This is the best! Wolf Forte Primo violin shoulder rest

My violin teacher has one similar to this and it's been a great help to her. She suggested that I buy this one to help keep my violin on my shoulder, at the right height and angle. I did and now I wouldn't be able to play without it. I'm no virtuoso and learning is tough. With my violin staying where I want it, practice is so much easier and less frustrating. Good choice for all students as well as teachers. In short, I love it. 5/5 Yvette Sparks - See all my reviews, June 3, 2009

    Better than a Kun

I really like the Everest shoulder rest, because it grips the violin well and doesn't fall off. I've had Kun pads in the past, but in recent years they changed the type of rubber they use, and it causes the pad to slip off the violin frequently. The Everest also has solid rubber feet, so it poses no danger to the violin; on a Kun, the rubber will eventually wear down to bare metal. The Everest appears to be well-made, and even has thicher shoulder padding- very comfortable! 5/5 Karen Roberts "Chloebird" (Evanston, IL) - See all my reviews, April 14, 2011

    Unbeatable Price to Value Ratio

I bought this for my daughter who has been playing violin for about 4 yrs now. This is high quality and excellently constructed with nice solid rubber legs that will not damage your instrument, I believe this is even better than a Kun she used to have that we paid almost $35 for. If you are comparing this with a Resonans TRUST ME, pay the couple dollars extra and get this, the quality is night and day, she had a Resonans and the exposed metal rivets damaged the wood on her violin, you will never have that problem with the EVEREST, she also said it is the most comfortable shoulder rest she has had and keeps the violin tucked between her chin and shoulder effortlessly hands free.I ordered mine on Amazon, shipped by "Everjoy Music" and it arrived lightning fast, second day after I ordered it, and that was with FREE shipping! 5/5 Michael D. God, Why Did I Wait So Long?

I am not a professional musician by any means--I play the keyboard moderately well, but a couple of years ago I decided to broaden my horizons a little, so bought a violin (from Amazon, of course...) I watched numerous videos both before and after that purchase, and a few that stuck with me 'poo-pooed' the use of a shoulder rest, as if that somehow was an affront to the 'purist' philosophy. Well, I listened to that and toughed it out--failing to make any progress whatsoever--until just the other night when I watched a virtuoso violinist play Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Guess what? She used a shoulder rest. Well, deciding to be a moron no longer, I spent a little time reading reviews and settled on this, for both the price and apparent quality. I received it today, a day early even with Prime, and then watched a short Youtube video on how to install it. Oh. My. God. What an amazing difference! The rest installed tightly and perfectly, and within thirty seconds I was holding the instrument... 5/5 R. Seehoffer "Author" (Mesa, AZ) - See all my reviews, August 1, 2012

    Awesome!

From an initial visual inspection this shoulder rest is built a lot better than the Kun one. My son originally had the Kun collapsible one and it didn't last long. The weakest part were the "fingers" that grab the edge of the violin. It's rubber coated over plastic and eventually the inner plastic breaks. I called Kun since the warranty was in effect and they sent me another finger screw on piece. Guess what? Yep, broke again and I made sure that my son was using it right and not forcing it to bend.Anyway, with this rest the fingers are quite robust and thicker in design. It has much more "meat" to grab the edge of the violin and it looks like it will last much longer. Time will tell. My gut feeling is that it will last a long long time. This one is not of a collapsible design but even with the collapsible Kun, it still is pretty big and the Everest is not that much bigger even though it doesn't collapse.Oh, by the way, the Everest is about... 5/5 Kingmeow (NJ) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Best shoulder rest online

My teacher suggested this to me. It comes in so many colors. It's adjustable and is easy to put it on or remove. No complaints so far. 5/5 Deepika (Dayton, USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Works great!

The price was right, it showed up as they said it would, and it has been in use ever since. Good product. If I ever needed another one I would not hesitate purchasing another one of these. 5/5 James Anderson (DELTA, UTAH, US) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Good Shoulder Rest

I bought this for my 10yr old daughter just getting into violin lessons.I initially bought the Resonans shoulder rest which was just terrible. I bought that one because it was cheap and it was the one that was at our local music store. The Kun one was the one our violin instructor uses so I bought it from Amazon. My daughter finds this one very comfortable. The grips that hold to the violin have a nice rubber to prevent scratches. The curved design and the foam add to the comfort. The best part is that its height adjustable by "unscrewing" the grips some.I would highly recommend this one vs. the Resonans branded one. 5/5 Pitter S. I recommend this product

My son, age 12, likes this shoulder rest better than any of the others we have tried. The fact that it is collapsible makes it easier to store and keeps it from getting broken at school. 5/5 sandym "sandy" (United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) To Each Instrument Its Own...

I bought a set of these strings for my student violin of which I continue to play with into college and after in a community orchestra. My student instrument tends to prefer the inexpensive strings and sounds better with them, hence my title to each instrument its own. But I find this set to be warm and beautiful like a gut set even though the strings are steel. On my more expensive instrument I prefer the Pirastro brand like Pirastro Gold and I feel as though the Prelude's compare. The Piastro Gold is sharper and deeper/darker with some brightness to it. The Preludes have the same warmth, but is more sweeter sounding than the Golds. Furthermore, it takes little time for it to acclimate than the Gold and is far cheaper. It may sound a little more muted than the Gold, but I'm happy with the projection of the Prelude if I can get a smooth, sweet, sound like I do. It doesn't sound broken or harsh, the Preludes are smooth like buttah and they last a long time (not as long as... 5/5 Danielle (USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: D'Addario Prelude Violin String Set, 4/4 Scale, Medium Tension (CD-ROM) I bought a set of these strings for my student violin of which I continue to play with into college and after in a community orchestra. Beginner's Best Friend

I recently started learning to play an electric violin and had to replace one of my strings. I had no idea what I was doing, but these strings were affordable and highly rated. So, I gave them a go. I'm glad I did! These strings will be your best friend if you are a novice player who has fumbled tuning the strings a time or two. The inside of the envelope reveals a color code for each string (G,D,A,E), and I had no trouble at all replacing my broken string with one of these for the very first time. The replacement blends in with the other steel strings that my violin came with. If you don't want your practice to be held up with a broken string, I highly recommend buying two or three of these packs for backup! 5/5 HowlyGrowly (TX, USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Nice strings for the price.

I like the tone these strings have, especially since they're lower in the price range. I have been playing for almost ten years, I'm still a student so I can't afford anything fancy, but these work nice in group performances. The full, warmer tone fits nicely and I have no problems tuning them. 5/5 Liz - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
