Toshiba Mini NB305-N410BL 10.1-Inch Royal Blue Netbook

topbook99 Toshiba Mini NB305-N410BL 10.1-Inch Royal Blue Netbook 11 Hours of Battery Life Review.

Ive been waiting for just the right netbook. This is it!2010-01-17By Russ Boyer (Columbia, MO USA)I have been in the market for a netbook for over a year now. I have spent many a hour pouring over reviews online, watching youtube unboxings and reviews, and actually doing a lot of hands on in retail stores with all of the options out there. I am thrilled to say that after only 24 hours with the Toshiba NB305-N410WH, I know that I waited for just the right one.
The reviews for its predecessor (the NB205) had put that netbook on the top of most professional reviewers list. And, indeed in my own hands on tests, it was right at the top as well. My main concern was the battery that stuck out of the back on that model. I had come close to overlooking this drawback, as I was so pleased with the rest of the model. What kept me from it was a concern I had read from some reviews indicating that sometimes streaming video would skip or get stuck (a universal concern on most netbooks)either due to processor or graphics.
Here is why I LOVE this little fella:
    * The battery issue has been totally adressed, and in fact, upgraded. They have redesigned it and no more ugly bulge of battery sticking out of the back. Plus, they now say it has an 11 hour battery. My test of this gave me around 9.5 hours doing very basic surfing and setup. Not quite 11 hours, but am still elated with 9.5 hours. I can now really feel comfortable about leaving the power cable at home for the day. (however, the power cable is actaully fairly small) (Update 1/21/10In further testing of the battery life, I seem to now be averaging more like 7 hours under heavy usage, meaning video watching and constant use. I am still more than happy with that. Light usage will give you more like the 9.5 hours I mentioned.)
    * Im extremely happy with the performance. Everyone needs to keep in mind that netbooks have never been designed for processor intensive tasks, but this little guy rocks! The new Pinetrail Atom N450 platform seems to be a great fit for this netbook. The graphics engine is updated, as well. I have had absolutely no delays in any streaming video on YouTube or Netflix. (I did notice just a bit of stuttering in Hulu only when watching something full screen but this isnt an issue for me.) Surfing is snappy and responsive, just the way that I like it. For anyone that may have been on the fence about getting a netbook because they were concerned it might not perform, hop right off that fence and get the NB305. Seriously, I have a Macbook Pro and Dell laptop and this one has instantly become my go to for surfing on the couch or from bed. And, I know this will be the one I now take anywhere out of the house.
    * The overall look and feel of the NB305 is truly best in class. My big gripe with a ton of netbooks out there is their glossy covers-especially the black, but even other color glossy covers are fingerprint magnets. They just always look smudged and feel cheap to me. I got the textured white model and just love it. Even though I am sure it is all plastic, too, it just looks more expensive. The cover totally repels fingerprints and just feels good. The keyboard and trackpad have received universal love in the previous model and I absolutely agree. The keyboard is extremely easy to type on. No issues at all for me there. The trackpad is truly a selling feature as it is multi-touch. I have this on my Macbook Pro and LOVE it on this netbook. I love being able to do the 2 finger scroll up and side to side. It really makes surfing the web a joy. (I now curse my Dell for not having this.) This model actually reduced its weight to 2.6 lbs making it super easy to take with you. The bottom does heat up a bit but I never felt uncomfortable having it directly on my lap. (Update 2/20/10: Ok, there have been times when it has been uncomfortable on my lap. Especially if you are blocking the vents, which is easy to do when on your lap. I now just set it on the protective sleeve I bought for it and were good to go.) This new model has sleeker look than previous models, a little more streamlined in the front. Overall, form factor gets a big A+.
So, there are a couple areas for improvement, however, I dont think they are deal breakers given the other areas where the NB-305 excels:
    1) The speakers are not great. Actually, theyre pretty bad compared to my Mac and Dell. This is definitely an area to improve on, but have found this to be true of all the netbooks I have been able to hear. Im not saying that you cant hear what you are watching, but I will plan on using earbuds for watching video or listening to music.
    2) Im a little bugged that these just come with Windows7 Starter and not Windows7 Home Premium. I feel a little punked into having to pay an extra $80 for the upgrade (which was extremely simple and fast, by the...

Could the Hall Make Room for Derek Fisher?

  • Sep 13, 2010 from HoopDoctors(TheHoopDoctors.com) in *

With Scottie Pippen entering the Hall of Fame (HOF), it has made a lot of us wonder why it took so long for the Chicago Bulls organization to honor him with his own statue. For the defensive-minded forward who joined Michael Jordan for all 6 of his NBA titles, Pippen has always seemed like a lock for the HOF. It also makes me wonder about other possible future Hall of Fame players. I so have the feeling that this is gonna turn into a series of articles.
Over the past few seasons, basketball writers have discussed ad nauseum who rightfully owns the Lakers 2000-2002 three-peat Shaq or Kobe? Above all other arguments, it seems apparent that no great player truly wins any titles by him (or her)-self. Even Kobe Bryant and Shaquille ONeal needed each other to win those titles against those teams. Every dynasty not only has a great player to back up their leader, but these great teams frequently feature a third or fourth option. And, historically, the HOF has made room for these 3rd and even 4th option players (in bold below).
The 1991-1998 Chicago Bulls Michael Jordan had Scottie Pippen and either Dennis Rodman or Horace Grant. 6 championships.
The 1989-1990 Detroit Pistons Isiah Thomas had Joe Dumars and Dennis Rodman and Bill Laimbeer. 2 championships.
The 1980-1988 Los Angeles Lakers Magic Johnson had Kareem Abdul-Jabbaror the other way around
    and James Worthy. 5 championships.
The 1981-1986 Boston Celtics Larry Bird had Kevin McHale and Robert Parish and Dennis Johnson. 3 championships.
The 1957-1969 Boston Celtics Bill Russell had Bob Cousy and Tommy Heinsohn, Frank Ramsey, and K.C. Jones, etc. 11 championships.
Even the 1948-1954 Minneapolis Lakers George Mikan had Jim Pollard and Vern Mikkelsen. 5 championships (3 NBA, 1 NBL, and 1 BAA).
During the last decade or so,
The 1999-present San Antonio Spurs Tim Duncan has had Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili. 4 championships.
The 2000-2004 Los Angeles Lakers Shaquille ONeal had Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher. 3 championships.
Over the last couple seasons (2009-present), Bryant has had Pau Gasol and Fisher, and added 2 more championships, giving Bryant and Fisher 5.
Now, if Manu Ginobili makes it in the HOF, as some predict he will, why not Fisher?
As Los Angeles Lakers point guard Derek Fisher prepares to defend back-to-back titles for the second time in his career, it is a fitting time to discuss Fishers case for making the Basketball Hall of Fame.
When you think of the Hall of Fame, you mayas I dotend to think of the greats of the game like Kareem, Wilt, Russell, Magic, and Jordan (and soon enough Bryant). Who you may not think about are players like Bob Houbregs, Slater Martin, and Clyde Lovellette (all in the HOF).
The case against Los Angeles Lakers starting point guard Derek Fisher making the HOF is as easy as it is solid.

Fishers career points, as well as assists, are nowhere near most other HOF players. Fisher is not in the top 300 all-time in scoring, as most HOF players are. He is close enough to Clyde Lovellette, 211th, with Dave Cowens, Dave DeBusschere, Jerry Lucas, and Billy Cunningham not far ahead of that. And, by the time he retires, Fisher could approach these players in all-time scoring.
Fisher has never been elected to a single All-star game
Fisher has no individual awards or honors in NBA basketball
He was not the driving force behind the Lakers championships of the 2000s

But, before we close the case for Fisher in the HOF, lets take a look at several HOF players with similar resumes to D-Fish.

U.K. prime minister’s PR guru reportedly linked to royals’ phone hacking

Coalition government risks being tainted by case involving Prince Charles, his sons

    .msnbc.com
    updated 36 minutes ago

LONDON — Britain’s government came under pressure Thursday amid allegations that a top prime ministerial aide was involved in illegally tapping cell phones of members of the royal family.

In a previous job as editor at one of the country’s leading tabloids, the Prime Minister David Cameron’s media advisor Andy Coulson was claimed to have discussed with his staff about keeping tabs on the first in line to the throne, Prince Charles, and his sons William and Harry, The New York Times reported.

Coulson has always denied involvement or any knowledge of the tapping, insisting a rogue journalist was responsible.

The News of the World aggressively rebutted the allegations in the Times, which dedicated a team of reporters to the story for several months.

The case goes back to 2005, when the News of The World began printing especially intimate details about the princes’ lives.

At the same time, members of the royal family began to suspect that messages on their mobile phones had been listened to before the owners of the telephones themselves had heard them.

The newspaper’s royal correspondent Clive Goodman and a private investigator working with him, Glenn Mulcaire, were eventually sent to prison for hacking into the mobile phones of the royal inner circle.

    Cameron has backed Coulson

While Coulson quit after the men were imprisoned, he has always said he did not know anything illegal was going on while he was editor of what is widely regarded as the most salacious of the country’s aggressive so-called red-top tabloid newspapers.

..However, the New York Times c

Review Top Gear: The Complete Season 13

  • Sep 28, 2010 from TVOvermind(TVOvermind) in Entertainment
TVOvermind Top Gear is possibly the best thing to come out of England. I was channel-surfing in my hotel in London when I came across three guys attempting to sail amphibious vehicles and failing miserablyand I was in love. I dont know much about cars, but Top Gear is not your traditional car show; rather, its a show about three presenters who love cars and the various car-related shenanigans they get into (and then occasionally about cars). Its bitingly funny, at times entirely immature, and the most entertaining show on BBC America, whether you understand everything they say or not.
Thankfully, BBC Home Entertainment was wise enough to start releasing Top Gear on DVD awhile back, and today saw the release of season 13. Come along with me as I poke around the further adventures of Jeremy, Richard, James and The Stig.
    The Show
Top Gear is a phenomenon in the UK, and rightfully so, because its bursting with personality. The three presenters Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May all have their own unique character traits and an easy banter between them that cant be duplicated (and yes, sadly, we in America have tried). All of them are smart, funny and easy to like, and undoubtedly by an episode or two youll have a favorite. Me, Im a Hamster fan.
The best part of the series is the ambitious and sometimes absurd challenges the presenters embark on. This season, youll see Richard and James try to race the Royal Mail in a Porsche, Jeremy and James try to come up with their own advertisement for the Volkswagon Chirocco (with disastrous results), Jeremy being chased by the British Army, and a faux reveal of the identity of the shows mysterious racing driver known only as The Stig. The latter is painfully ironic considering that the man behind Stigs helmet, Ben Collins, elected to rain on everyones parade and reveal himself as the Stig so he could write a book. He was subsequently let go from Top Gear, and now swears hes going to lead his own competing series. Im not particularly impressed.
Top Gear also features a segment called Star In A Reasonably Priced Car, where various personalities take to the shows track to see who can set the best time. In this set, those celebs include Jay Leno, sprinter Usain Bolt, Sienna Miller, comedian Michael McIntyre (in one of the most hilarious interview segments ever on this show) and AC/DCs Brian Johnson.
    The DVDs
I didnt receive these discs in their retail cases, so I cant comment on the packaging, but if its anything like the previous seasons, it should be just a simple plastic snapcase. I love it when packaging is easy.
There are two forced trailers (one for Torchwood: Children of Earth and one for BBC America) before the main menu on disc one, but you can skip those by hitting the chapter-forward button on your remote. Graphically, the main menus look great, but the episode menus leave something to be desired. The menus themselves do have a play all and episode selection option, and each episode has chapter selection but without pictures or anything resembling episode names, so it could be difficult to locate a particular part of an episode if you dont remember it very well. At least for on-air listings, the episodes were named by whichever guest star was appearing, but here they just say Episode 1 or Episode 2.
Video and audio are presentable enough here, though the video isnt the crispest Ive ever seen; its not, however, any worse than if you had recorded the episodes on DVR and were watching them there. You do have widescreen presentation, which is nice. Previous volumes have elicited complaints that theyve been edited from their original BBC broadcast versions, but since I watched these episodes on BBC America (which tends to be edited to begin with), I cant speak to that. If there are edits, you still get the majority of some great episodes regardless.
    The Special Features
BBC Home Entertainment has finally started including special features on Top Gear DVDs, and this release is no exception. It comes with a smattering of modest special features:

Stig POV: A short featurette allowing us to see some of The Stigs drives from his point of view, which is interesting if youre even vaguely into the cars they feature on the show.
Spitfire Magic: Almost four minutes of the guys with Spitfires.
Ken Block: Slow Motion: Slow-motion footage from James day with stunt driver Ken Block. Its pretty amazing to look at, but theres only just over three minutes of it here.
Extended interviews with Brian Johnson and racing driver Jenson Button. Both of these are just about fifteen minutes, but my interest in them waned over time. It depends on your interest in either of the personalities.
Lamborghini Murcielago Run In Abu Dhabi: Just over a very fast, very loud minute of the Lambo doing what the Lambo does best.
Train Race Sequence with Jeremy Clarkson: More footage from Jeremys adventure on a steam train from the first episode.

Its good to see some extras on these sets, but for the most...
