George Eastman, A Biography

Creator: Elizabeth Brayer | 2006-09-30

Elizabeth Brayer lives in Rochester, NY. For the past 18 years she has served on both the George Eastman Legacy and the Landscape committees at the George Eastman House, International Museum of Photography and Film.

Publisher: University Rochester Press

About this book
Now back in print, this life of George Eastman is the first biography since 1930 of the man who transformed the world of photography. In this revealing and informative work, Brayer shows us how such key innovations as roll film and the light, hand-held camera helped the Eastman Kodak Company dominate the world market. More importantly, Brayer draws a vivid portrait of the man behind the money. Eastman worked hard at staying out of the limelight and even insisted that his donations be kept anonymous, prompting the Boston Globe to call him "America's most modest and least-known millionaire." Despite his retirement in 1925, Eastman showed little sign of slowing down. Making money had been interesting, but putting money to work became more so. In the 1920s he designed a special camera for use in orthodontia and established elaborate dental clinics for needy children around the world. He oversaw the building of the Eastman theatre and the Eastman School of Music. His contributions built a new campus for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a new medical school for the University of Rochester. Finally, he became the largest contributor to the education of African Americans during the 1920s and the Tuskegee Institute's most important benefactor. Elizabeth Brayer lives in Rochester, NY. For the past 18 years she has served on both the George Eastman Legacy and the Landscape committees at the George Eastman House, International Museum of Photography and Film. She writes about the history of central and Western New York State. George Eastman: A Biography was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 1996.

Are You My Mother?

Creator: Philip D. Eastman | 1960

Never having seen his mother, a baby bird makes humorous mistakes trying to find her.

Publisher: Random House Books for Young Readers

About this book
Back in 1957, Theodor Geisel responded to an article in Life magazine that lamented the use of boring reading primers in schools. Using the pseudonym of "Dr. Seuss" (Seuss was Geisel's middle name) and only two hundred twenty-three words, Geisel created a replacement for those dull primers: "The Cat in the Hat." The instant success of the book prompted Geisel and his wife to found Beginner Books, and Geisel wrote many popular books in this series, including "Hop on Pop, " "Fox in Socks, " and "Green Eggs and Ham." Other favorite titles in this series are "Go, Dog, Go!" and "Are You My Mother?" by P. D. Eastman, "A Fly Went By, " by Mike McClintock, and "Put Me in the Zoo, " by Robert Lopshire. These affordable hardcover books combine large print, easy vocabulary, and large, bright illustrations in stories kids will want to read again and again. Grades 1 - Grades 2.

Don't Buy the Board Book Edition

This 1 star review is for the board book edition -- certainly the harcover gets 5+ stars; it is a classic that should be in every child's library. But why does Random House insist on abridging its catalog to get them to fit into board book format? The board book strips down a story that's already quite simple, and takes all the flavor and joy out of it. Bottom line: if you want to enjoy "Are You My Mother?" go and buy the "complete" hardcover edition. If you need something sturdy that your child is going to teethe on, buy a Zwiekback biscuit. 1/5 Quaker Annie "reader" - See all my reviews This review is from: Are You My Mother? my favorite book ever

This book I know by heart, and I am 23 years old. My mother also knows it by heart because she had to read it to me over and over when I was a child. It was a joy to share this book with my niece and it will be a joy when I have children of my own to read this a thousand times like my mother did. I still have my old copy, and my neice has her brand new copy I bought for her on the day of her birth. It's a classic book teaching that "in all the world, this nest is best" 5/5 0, June 2, 1999

Excellent collection of Dr. Seuss books

My daughter is 5 years old and in kindergarten. She loves this book. The words are simple and easy to read and the repetition and rhyme help keep her attention. Having the stories in a collection makes her feel like she's reading a big kid's book, like her 8 year old brother. Together as a family, we have enjoyed reading this book numerous times. The stories include the following:* "It's Not Easy Being a Bunny* "Go, Dog, Go!"* "Are You My Mother?"* "The Best Nest"* "Put Me in the Zoo"* "A Fly Went By"I'd recommend this as a beginning reader book for kindergarten and first grade. Older kids may think they are beyond Dr. Seuss, but my son still enjoyed them last year in second grade and even now, when we read together.Younger children will appreciate the rhythm and rhymes, the colorful pictures and the silliness.I do not mind reading and re-reading the stories over and over and over. Good Value

I purchase a lot of books for my toddler granddaughter. This was a great buy with 6 stories in one hard covered book. Right now I'm reading it aloud to her. The repetition and rhymes are great for young readers. Warning to buyers...this is not a board book so unless your child has been taught to handle books carefully, I wouldn't give it to a young child unsupervised. I wish these stories were available on cd too. 4/5 Fulltime Nana (West) - See all my reviews This review is from: Big Blue Book of Beginner Books (Beginner Books(R)) (Hardcover) I purchase a lot of books for my toddler granddaughter. Classic right along with Dr Seuss

Big Dog ... Little Dog was probably the first book I read on my own. 20 years ago my uncle read all of P D Eastman's stories to me and now I get to read these same stories to his children. The illustrations are beautiful and the stories just as wonderful. No child should grow up without hearing these stories just once. The only problem is that the stories can be so funny they don't really work as bed time stories, I mean, the dogs do some of the silliest things that will keep your kids laughing for hours after. 5/5 J. Flap Your Wings

I am thrilled to find this book back in print. Our family received a paperback edition many years ago as a gift. We have read it literally to pieces. Since receiving this gift, we have added three children to our family through international adoption. Like the bird family, we don't look alike, but we share the same nest. My husband and I live by Mr. Bird's philosophy, "If an egg is in your nest, you sit on it and keep it warm." Our answer to nosy questions concerning one of our children - "He's in our nest, so he must be ours." We are now entering a new phase of parenting. The first of our 6 children is moving out to begin life on her own. Once again Mr. Bird in his wisdom has given us direction: "It's getting too crowded up here. Junior has to leave the nest. It is time for him to fly away...We must show him how to fly." Of course our pride matches Mr. Bird as we watch her go, "(S)he's happy now! Just watch (her) swim" or fly or... 5/5 Anne B. For Graduates: Parents and Children Alike

While this is obviously a children's book, don't lose sight of the metaphor! Like Mr. and Mrs. Bird, we usually are surprised by this "creature" in our nest, but what the heck, we do our best to feed and nurture them. And when they get too big for the nest, physically, psychologically and emotionally, we do need to push them out and tell them to flap their wings. And guess what? They become exactly who they are supposed to be, despite our attempts to make them who we THINK they should be. This is one of my favorite graduation books, mostly for my friends who are pushing their children out of the nest. 5/5 "wgutenkauf" (Dubai, United Arab Emirates) - See all my reviews This review is from: Flap Your Wings (Beginner Books(R)) (Library Binding) While this is obviously a children's book, don't lose sight of the metaphor! Funny primer

I was excited to see this book being printed again. Eastman ( Go Dog Go ) had me laughing out loud the first time I read this to my kids. A bird couple comes home to find an enormous egg ( an alligator egg) in their nest. The trials and tribulations of hatching and raising the " baby bird" are lessons in parenting and work ethics, funny as they are. The couple trying to teach their "baby bird " to fly brings the book to a hilarious climax. 5/5 0, March 9, 2000

A children's masterpiece as simple and complex as a haiku

I was well into my 30s before I realized that this was not a Dr. Seuss book. Given that it's issued in the same size and binding, I'd always assumed it was written by Seuss. My realization that it was written and illustrated by P.D. Eastman cleared one of my largest childhood confusions: I *loved* "Go Dog Do," and merely *liked* "The Cat in the Hat." Years later I realize that Eastman's art is funny, while Seuss's is fantastic, and I prefer the former to the latter. As another reviewer mentioned, you can stare at these dogs for a long time -- there's incredible depth to the expressions and postures of these seemingly simple illustrations. The insomniac dog who sleeps through the next morning's reveille is a favorite! The repetitive narration is similarly hypnotic, and you'll quickly find some of the expressions creeping into your every day dialog. All in all, my very favorite childhood book, and one of the few that I still re-read a few times a year. This is the book that made me want to learn to read

When I was three or four years old I thought Go Dog Go was the finest piece of literature ever written. I wanted it read almost every single day. I loved the pictures, I loved the words, I loved the story and I loved the characters. I memorized the text and recited it along whoever was reading, and when I was four I learned to sight read all the words in it and proudly read it to my parents instead. Unlike many books for preschoolers, it has a real plot, and it's a funny and relatively sophisticated plot at that. My three younger siblings all loved it too, and I was happy to take over a share of the Go Dog Go reading duties from my parents. Every four year old deserves to have a copy of this book and someone special to read it to them. 5/5 Michael Bird "Michael S. My favorite children's book

My all time favorite children's book. Big Dog. Little Dog. My son's first word was "dog". I loved this book when my teens were little and my little one (currently 6 ½ months) will sit through most of this book (sometimes all) when I read it to her now. It is a great "first reader" as the words are common and the pictures offer help in that when one reads "One big dog going in." and "Two little dogs going out." the picture shows just that. There are red, yellow and green trees, dogs "over the water", dogs "under the house" and lots more word pictures that are fun to read and easy to learn by. The three dogs having a party on a boat at night is just about my favorite line but I still get the most fun when it is night and the dogs are supposed to be asleep and one little one is laying in bed with his eyes wide open. Simply put every child should have this book in their library and reading it to a child should start at a... 5/5 0, December 1, 2001

    This Book Works Brilliantly

I have never forgotten reading *Sam and the Firefly* as a child, and I never will. One of my children projects all of his naughty deeds onto Sam; the other wants me to be sure to read every single word on every single page. This is a book that, on all levels, just plain works.Gus is a law-abiding owl who teaches Sam to make words with his fire-fly light. Sam likes the words but soon is into mischief, writing "cold dogs" above a hot dog stand and nearly causing a riot by writing "free" above a movie theater. His tricks border on the dark as he almost causes cars to collide. The scary darkness of the tale never comes to anything but engages the reader completely. My children worried about the outcome, and wondered (like Gus) how to control Sam. The book even becomes tense when Sam ends up in a closed glass jar and needs rescuing. Yes, Gus is a lot like a parent. Sam is a lot like a child. And the book is full of learning to read and testing... 5/5 Gillian M. They Fly by Night

This is a great going-to-bed book-but only for the first seven pages. During this opening sequence, Sam the Owl calls out "who wants to play," but the misty blue-grey landscape reveals sleeping animals only. Then, on pages 8-9, Sam sees the light-or rather-a light, the one on the tail of the very spirited Gus the Firefly! Following Sam, firefly Gus illuminates the night sky with zigs and zags, and he begins to spell brightly lit words in the night sky. Intoxicated by the power of words, Gus misdirects airplanes, advertises a "FREE SHOW" at the theater, changes "hot dogs" to "COLD dogs," and performs other `bad tricks.' But what will happen when the understandably angry hotdog seller captures Gus?P. D. Eastman's enduring story is funny, exciting, and easy to read. The firefly's bright yellow words are dazzling, especially for small fry, and the story shows the power of words (for good and for bad) and the value of friendship. A great find you may remember from years... 5/5 M. Allen Greenbaum (California) - See all my reviews, December 22, 2004

Super Book to Teach Youngsters how to Read!

Sam and the firefly is a super book for many reasons. First of all, Sam and the Firefly is the first book I learned how to read. My mother read it to me every night, until she started letting me read some of the words, and soon, I could read the whole book. (I didn't memorize the book, either.)I highly recommend that you give this book to youngsters who are beginning to read. This book also has a cute plot that will capture youngster's attention, and the illustrations are very fun. This book is a fun read, and I will treasure it forever. 5/5 0, March 3, 2000

    Kodak cheats

Kodak cheats its printer users by running a print-head clean, which uses both black and color ink, after every print job. What does this mean to the end user? Lots of wasted ink.I have owned my Kodak AiO printer for a couple of years, and it has been a dependable printer. In the course of those 2 years I've replaced both the black and color ink cartridges 5 times apiece. I have never printed a color document with this printer --- it's used only for printing black & white invoices and receipts. Still, my color ink cartridges run out at almost the exact same time as my black ink cartridges (usually within one or 2 printed pages). Kodak ink prices are very reasonable, but by forcing their printers to waste ink after each print, they ensure that you will be buying twice as much ink as you use. Another feature is that Kodak printers (or my EasyShare 5100, at least) will not print if either the color or black ink cartridge is empty. This review is from: Kodak 8367849 Combo Ink Cartridge (Office Product) Kodak cheats its printer users by running a print-head clean, which uses both black and color ink, after every print job. The printer won't print a B&W document unless... Works great, great quality photos

Colors are very vibrant and display true color. I had to print pictures for a new passport, and rather than driving all over the place, I took my self portrait, put the memory card in the card slot of the printer and printed off the "head shot". Certainly a whole lot cheaper than paying for the passport photos. 5/5 Rich (Rochester, NY) - See all my reviews This review is from: Kodak 8367849 Combo Ink Cartridge (Office Product) Colors are very vibrant and display true color. Ink cartridges are a scam.

The ink cartridges for the Kodax ESP may be cheaper than the competition, but you will go through way more than you would with any other brand. The print heads "clean" their selves each time you print something thus wasting a massive amount of ink. It seems to be a marketing scheme to me. I am currently looking for a new printer. I will not donate or give my Kodak printer away. I will trash it for the simple fact that Kodak is blatantly taking advantage of its consumers. 1/5 Arnie - See all my reviews This review is from: Kodak 8367849 Combo Ink Cartridge (Office Product) The ink cartridges for the Kodax ESP may be cheaper than the competition, but you will go through way more than you would with any other brand.

5/5 J. I love this book...

I made my father read this book to me every night when I wasyoung, and I knew it so well I could tell if he tried to skip pages! This book will always be my all-time favorite book for children. I adored knowing what Ted and Fred should do before they did! 5/5 Sherry Robertson (pandora331@yahoo.com) (Hinesville, Georgia, USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Big Dog... Little Dog (A Bedtime Story) (Paperback) I bought this book for my son, it was his favorite and I he insisted that I read it to him everynight. When I became a day-care teacher, I took the book with me to read to my class of three-year-olds. It soon became a favorite of theirs as well. It eventually got old and torn, my son never forgave me for taking it to class. My son is now 20 years old with a son of his own. I am buying this book again for my new grandson. My son will be thrilled and I'm sure that my grandson will consider this book to be his favorite as well. This book shows how different we all are, yet we can all be friends and live happily together, because of, and inspite of, our differences. My Kindergartener loves to read this book!

My daughter who is in in kindergarten has recently learned to read. She has a pretty good mastery of basic sight words and has been reading very basic books for about 10 months. A lot of the 'beginner' books out there are too easy or too boring ("The cat sat. Mat sat. The cat sat on mat....."). This book is a perfect balance of entertainment with silly story lines and rhyming words to easily keep her attention. If your child has completed the VERY early reading books (such as the Bob books), and has a pretty good handle on sight words and basic phonics, he or she will do well reading this with minimal assistance. 5/5 Suzanne Riffel (Las Vegas) - See all my reviews, December 6, 2010

Great value and kids love it

My kids love Dr. Seuss and these are beginner books so they are easier for my 1st grader to read on her own. Great value over purchasing each book individually. We bought the Big Blue, Big Green and Big Red at the same time and enjoy all of them. 5/5 Mommy & Amazon Shopper "Karyn" (KS United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Stories are a bit rough

I am a mother of a toddler and I think this book of stories does not have the best wording. We have all of them. I could not find this in the store so I ordered it online. Now I know why. One story about a bad dog says "maybe we should let you there to drown.". Not something I want to read or explain etc. another story is about a very bad bunny but it doesn't really come around to explain why they should not be bad. Stick with the green, blue or purple books. 1/5 RookieWife - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
