Deluxe Fiddling Method

Creator: Craig Duncan | Music - 2003-12-30

This book presents a general survey of American fiddling.

Publisher: Mel Bay Publications

About this book
This book presents a general survey of American fiddling. The author's intent is to teach the basics of fiddling by beginning with essential bowings and fingerings, and progressing from simple to more complex renditions of tunes. As fiddling is an aural tradition and fiddlers from different parts of the country play a given tune in many ways, tunes included in this book are offered only as themselves. The author has attempted to present usable fingerings, bowings and explanations of each of the 49 tunes in this book. The end result is the most widely-used fiddle method available! Craig Duncan is joined by guitarist Robert Bowlin in performing 32 tunes from the popular text, Mel Bay's Deluxe Fiddling Method. Each tune is performed at slow and medium tempos. Shuffle bowing and double shuffle bowing techniques are presented. Notation is shown at the bottom of the screen beneath split-screen views of both hands. This video sets a new standard for home teaching tools and is perfect for beginning students and for those who play the instrument, but want to learn more about fiddling.

American Fiddle Method Piano Accompaniment, Beginning Tunes and Techniques

Creator: Brian Wicklund, Bob Walser | 2006-12-05

About this book
Private studio teachers, school string programs and Suzuki teachers preparing for recitals will welcome these tasteful piano accompaniments for the violin, viola and cello editions of Volume 1of Brian Wicklunds American Fiddle Method. Acknowledged as the most widely used fiddle method in the country, Wicklund became aware of the increasing demand for a parallel piano accompaniment series and engaged his friend Bob Walser to take on the task of writing it.Collaborating closely with Wicklund, Walser was encouraged to adhere to the chord progressions suggested in the original books, but given leeway to add interesting variations in rhythm and harmony. The result is a book of arrangements that welcomes pianists to the jamming circle. Piano playing teachers, parents and siblings can now join in the fun, and fiddle tunes can be featured in concerts and recitals with the support of an accompanist. In addition, principals of accompaniment learned by playing these arrangements can be applied to accompanying other tunes, the voice or other instruments. The American Fiddle Method itself provides the beginner with the elements needed to become a proficient fiddler. Based on many years of teaching experience, the author introduces concepts and techniques that yield solid results. This method encourages creativity in the student by including variations of the tunes to illustrate how they can serve as a basis for improvisation.

    Good and comfortable mute

I am a beginner, and this mute seems to do a fine job in decreasing the volume of my mistakes :) It is very easy to use. The material is firm but very soft so I do not have to worry about damaging the bridge ( I was a bit apprehensive about using a nickel or gold plated mute). The mute fits very well on a 4/4 violin and does will not fall off even if you shake the instrument upside down (not sure why anyone would but isn't it nice to know?). Since it seems over-sized I am sure it would fit on any smaller violin as well.I only wish it would mute to an even lower volume. 5/5 Boruta Di Lira (NJ, US) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Nice!

This mute works great! It cuts the loudness down by well over half. My husband said he could barely hear me in the next room. Perfect for practicing, late night playing, or people that live with room mates or in apartments. Easy to put on and take off. The rubber won't hurt your violin, bridge or strings. I love it! 5/5 Charlene Thompson "Forever Learning New Things" (Virginia Beach, VA United States) - See all my reviews, January 4, 2008

    Great tonal qualities!

This mute is great! It mutes a lot too! You can actually control how much the mute actually mutes your violin by raising it a little bit above the bridge. I usually put it a little over half way on when I am in a concert and it is Con Sordini because I prefer the tonal qualities of this rather than my "two holed mute". A lot better sound than those metal ones, put less stress on your bridge and are a lot cheaper too! 5/5 R. Hellinger (Upstate NY) - See all my reviews, July 17, 2007

Nice keyboard...and not just for gamers.

First, I'm not a gamer. I enjoy a good FPS but generally get pwned by kids 30 years younger than me. I didn't buy this keyboard for it's gaming features. I needed to replace my Logitech MX5000 BT keyboard because it was driving me crazy with it's connection issues. The criteria I had for the replacement was that it be wired (I've tried too many flaky wireless solutions); that it preferably have laptop style keys; that it be relatively quiet (so my wife can sleep in the next room); and that the keys have a switchable backlight (more on that later). The Lycosa met these requirements for me.The keyboard itself is really nice looking, not too big, and very low profile. The high gloss body finish does show finger prints and dust. The keys have a matte rubber finish that feels good under the finger tips.I'm almost a touch typist and I have been intrigued by the Das Keyboard II but I just wasn't really ready to commit to a completely unmarked keyboard. Supernice!

After doing a lot of research I finally decided on this keyboard (instead of the G15 or a game pa). I'm used to just using 13 dollar microsoft keyboards, so it was a lot of money for 'just' a keyboard, but so worth it!Just the keyboard alone, minus the programmable aspects, have been great. I love how it looks when lit up (which I've had no trouble with it seeming too dim), and when my computer is off it looks good too with it's dull black look instead of a shiny plastic like most keyboards.I also love that it's a very economic design, and especially small for a programmable keyboard. One of my concerns was that some of the other programmable keybards simply seemed huge, and I felt like they were investing too much desk space both for normal computer use and especially for gaming where I have the bad habit of shoving the keyboard to the far left to use mostly the right side.On that note, because I'm a 'goofy footed' gamer that doesn't use the... 5/5 Popsicledeath (Boise, ID) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Overall a good keyboard.

This is a good keyboard, in most ways. The color is a nice glossy black, somewhat sleek, back lit in a nice cold blue. I only have one real issue with it:The rubberized coating on the keys. More thought should have been put into this, as it seems to be easy to erode. My W, A, and D keys are seriously worn through on the top, to the point that there are no recognizable characters on those keys anymore. You just see the transparent key underneath, along with the "X" shape on the underside of the keys. This was a keyboard for gamers, eh? Considering that I've had the keyboard for 7 months now , and that the erosion started after about three months, are any of the keys going to be legible in another 7 months? This coating is really substandard. I still have 10 and 15 year old keyboards in use with all the keys legible. 3/5 A. Millar - See all my reviews, June 19, 2009

Great book, but quirky and unconventional, like Mr Wiliamson

This is the first fiddle book I bought, some 10 years ago, and I still go back to it for something different on occasion. It has 100 or so tunes, a lot of which are rare these days. This is not a book that will help you to play in celtic music sessions, as the tunes are mostly obscure, and if they are common, Robin always has to throw in some wild variation, or change the tune slightly. His choice of chords is better than anything I've seen in more conventional celtic fiddle books. He teaches the basic ornamentation, and each tune has a paragraph written about it. The record, now a cd, is helpful to learn his stylings and the tunes but only covers a small amount of the tunes printed, 20 maybe. This book has great personality and is much more interesting than the sterile massed produced tune books of today. My only complaint is that I wish it had more tunes in the book and more tunes on the record. 4/5 "dogfishtooth" (USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: English, Welsh, Scottish & Irish Fiddle Tunes (Paperback) This is the first fiddle book I bought, some 10 years ago, and I still go back to it for something different on occasion. a world of music in a nutshell

This is the book that got me into Celtic music in the 1970's, following Robin Williamson from his "Incredible String Band" days into a type of music I've loved ever since. The included little floppy record (hope you have a turntable!)shows that his personal playing style is a bit eccentric compared to more traditional players I've heard since, but this book is a wonderful, accessible, concise, broad and sweeping introduction to traditional instrumentals of the British Isles. Short backgrounds are given for each tune, and the settings are keyed for real instruments. I can honestly recommend this book as an excellent value for any newcomer to the subject. Experienced players could only wish for MORE tunes! 5/5 prfb (Elkins, WV USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: English, Welsh, Scottish & Irish Fiddle Tunes (Paperback) This is the book that got me into Celtic music in the 1970's, following Robin Williamson from his "Incredible String Band" days into a type of music I've loved ever since. Outstanding book of tunes

This is one of the best books I've come across for classic English/Welsh/Scottish tunes. It's especially nice for flute and recorder playing. It also includes chords for guitar and a disc of the tunes. I initally checked this book out of the library but quickly realized I had to have it in my own personal library. Better than average

I am a professional musician, music teacher and violin dealer. I had a problem getting beginner violins from my manufacturer in China, so I figured i would look at this Violin. First let me say that 98% of beginner violin selling in the USA for under $200.00 are Made in China. This one is no worse or better than factory violins retailing for over $150.00. Of course before I sell it to a student I change the strings and re fit the bridge. A decent set of strings costs me about $13.00 and a bridge about three dollars. You can learn how to fit a bridge on utube. So I have a total of 65$ in the instrument. I put it next to another mass produced best selling Violin from China retailing at $150.00 and it sounded better, but that is with new strings. This violin should get the beginner student through the first year of playing, then an upgraded violin would be in order, but so many people quit or just want some basic enjoyment that there is no need to spend $200. 5 Stars for a violin in this price range

I'll be honest, I only ordered this violin because I was curious. I have been playing for twelve years and recently decided it might be fun to try a new violin instead of the one I've had since I was a teenager. I ordered a couple of cheapies with Christmas gift card money (yay for gift cards!) and honestly, of the three I got, this was the best. Here's the scoop on this violin package:- The Case. You'll get a rigid foam case. It's not very high quality, but it'll protect your instrument when stored around the house. It has a nice pocket, a zipper, and space for two bows. I won't complain about the case. None of this stuff is very high quality, but look at the price.-Rosin. I like extra dark colophane rosin so I'll probably just throw this away, but that's just my preference. It's nice that it's here. I didn't try using it, but it looks like you'll have to score it a few times with a butter knife to get it going. This is normal.-The Bow... 5/5 Rorschach - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Yep - its cheap - but it does play.

I listen to all the 'moaners' out there, some who profess to be 'professionals'. I bought one of these because I was curious. I've been playing for a short while, have much nicer violins. If you set this one up properly, it plays just fine. Certainly, its sound is restricted - its lacquered. Sure the wood is wierd looking, but tuned (and any violin pegs will slip if not handled correctly), it will hold a student just fine. I play because its fun to play, and I play this violin because its fun to play. Rhino has outdone themselves with this new SINGIN' IN THE RAIN double CD set. They have dramatically improved the sound since the last single CD, and added many tracks that weren't on their first issue. Secondly, someone wisely re-programmed the tracks so that some of the less interesting underscoring cues were moved to a "supplemenary section" on the 2nd disc, so that the listening experience of Disc One is a real treat. As for the music, it is of course, without peer. This "toy" violin is a great beginning instrument for possible future violinist

I caught my three year old grandson pretending to play music by running a stick across another stick...as though he was playing a violin. Hmmmm I thought...just maybe??? I called our local Suzuki school and they suggested we wait until he was 4 yrs old to give him violin lessons. I saw the electronic toy violin and thought it would give him something a little better than two sticks to get a feel for a true instrument...and that it did. He is learning to properly hold the instrument (his mother played violin and I the viola, as children), and to properly run the bow across the bridge. The programmed tunes are very nice. I really like that the tunes are played based on the child running the bow over the bridge of the violin. The are no real strings, so there is no worry that a 3 yr old will break the strings. My grandson thinks that he is actually playing and making music. I think this little violin shld be a required toy for evry child who plans to take violin/viola lessons. My... 4/5 Laura A. Decent toy, poor customer service from company

I bought this toy for my 4 1/2 year old son who loves music and requested a violin from Santa for Christmas. Upon it's arrival, I was disappointed in how small it was and overall it just seemed a bit "chincy". I tried it out before wrapping it up and you do have to get the bow just right on the strings for the music to keep playing (it sort of cuts in and out). I decided it would be fun for him in spite of my impressions. He did really like it, and the smaller size was actually about right for him. The only problem was that it quit working within the first hour. We tried replacing the batteries and still nothing. I know it was played with gently so this was a big disappointment. There was no return/exchange info on the sales receipt and I have failed in getting a live person at the phone number listed. My messages left have gone totally unanswered. I fear I will have to file a claim with Amazon's A-Z guarantee department as this company (The Planet Shops) is quite lacking in their... 4/5 sportsmom (Fargo, N.D) - See all my reviews = Durability:, December 30, 2009

    "Real" toy violin

My 3 year old daughter who has autism was always fascinated with my violin and enjoyed drawing the bow and pluck the strings. Although there are no strings to pluck on this violin I was amazed at how authenitic it looked and the wonderful sound of the 4 classical music pieces that you could play by simply pushing a button. My most favorite aspect was the ability to draw the bow across what looked like strings which moved the apparatus back and forth and it would play the next note in the song if you held the bow in the position it would hold the note, so she really felt as if she was playing. Although she mostly likes to push the demo buttons to here the song without using the bow, she has enjoyed it as much as when she would want to pluck the strings on my violin. 4/5 R. Very Good Quality Violin Stand

I ordered this violin stand via Amazon from Johnson String Instruments. The company does an excellent job with shipping the items quickly. This violin stand is top notch. I don't think you could improve on the design. It adjusts for the height of your instrument and the bow hook also adjusts to various heights. It folds quickly and compactly so you can tuck it out of the way if necessary or of course is terrific for carrying with you.Excellent violin stand. Highly recommend both the stand and the Johnson String Instrument company. 5/5 History Buff - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Good stand

Very solid construction. Folds flat and small, but not as convenient as the Hercules violin stand with travel bag. No place to put your rosin either.Works great for a mandolin too. I loop my strap over the bow holder to make it easier to pick up! 4/5 Mike (Illinois) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Should have bought two

I recently bought two different stands for a musical production I performed in. I used this stand for my violin and was extremely pleased with it. I felt very confident that my violin would be secure once I set it down. I cut corners and spent a little less on a different stand that was not as well designed (and was cheaper) for my mandolin and was extremely disappointed. Lesson learned. 5/5 N Nelson (UT) - See all my reviews This review is from: Ingles Adjustable Violin and Viola Stand (Electronics) I recently bought two different stands for a musical production I performed in. The Python of Headsets

I've been through dozens of headsets in my MMO gaming career. Cords get worn from rubbing on the edges of desks, chairs and hoodie zippers. Mics are always flimsy and in the way when not in direct use. So many have poor sound quality even in the $50+ range. So finding a good headset is like trying to find the lost city of Atlantis.Reading all of the features on this one though... you'd think it may just be the perfect one. The easy-to-adjust with one hand volume controls are a personal favorite. Any gamer knows you need both hands free the majority of the time. The ability to tuck the mic away in a safe place when not in use was actually what sold me on the headset and so far I LOVE it. I was worried it would be a right-side mic but it is a lefty (which I need) so if you prefer a right-sider this one won't work well for you. The sound quality is excellent and the fact that these are made so I can hear the phone ring or my kids calling for me while I play is very much a... 3/5 Rhianna Walker "Rhi" (Northwestern US) - See all my reviews, March 17, 2009

    A big step back

I was expecting an awful lot, getting my hands and ears on Plantronics new 777 Gaming Headset. I still, to this day, absolutely love , which you can find my review for here at Amazon. That headset is probably the most comfortable I've ever owned, had great sound quality and was just an all around good headset, minus a few annoyances. So, when I had the opportunity of trying the new GameCom 777 Surround Sound Gaming Headset, I was hoping for huge improvements. Instead, I'm finding myself liking it but putting it aside for the 770.First, the good. My biggest complaint with the previous 770 model was the USB connector that stood out a few inches. It's easy to knock into and I've had a friend break his on accident, basically ruining it... 3/5 Terry Mesnard (Bellevue, NE) - See all my reviews, April 14, 2009

GameCom 777 Headset - Can Be Broken-In and Adjusted To Relieve Tightness, Non-Dolby Sound is Average, Dolby Sound Is Better

The exceeded my expectations regarding comfort, which were admittedly quite low. I was really prepared for the worst because of all of the negative reviews of this product describing it like a "vice-grip" in the discomfort department. I had been in the market for a gaming set for PC gaming (think FPS) but I was reluctant to pull the trigger. I primarily buy headsets for music or general use. I knew I didn't want to spend the dollars that most high end gaming sets would require. I got to try these out and am glad to say that I now have a pair of my own.COMFORTI find the cushions on the ear-pieces and the head-band to be nice and soft. They have a velvet cloth covering them. Whatever the reason, these are definitely more comfortable than... 4/5 Mark "Technology, Music and Movies" (East Coast) - See all my reviews, August 6, 2009

This sticker presents a classical still life of an elegant old violin. This graceful instrument is essentially a hollow wooden box with rounded ends, two graceful f holes and a narrow center. The four sets of strings extend from a string holder at the bottom of the body over a raised bridge to the end of the narrow neck, or fingerboard where the four strings are inserted into a pegbox and are held there with pegs. The pegs are used to tune the violin. When the bow is drawn across the strings on the body of the violin it produces incredible, magical music! The gorgeous golden brown, almost orange tones are set off by graceful black velvet fabric.

The violin is a beautiful musical instrument, used in classical, folk, Irish and many other genres.
