Fingerboard Geography for Violin, Vol 1, An Intonation, Note-reading, Theory, Shifting System

Creator: Barbara Barber | Music - 2008-05

The book includes 4 pull-out color-coded Finger Pattern charts.

Publisher: Alfred Pub Co

About this book
String pedagogue Barbara Barber has developed an intonation system which teaches string players the layout of the fingerboard and takes the guesswork out of playing in tune. In Violin Fingerboard Geography, Volume 1, Finger Marches establish the 1st finger “home base” note on all four strings. Finger Pattern Exercises – 12 color-coded patterns – develop quick, precise action in the left hand without the need for fingerboard tapes. Fingerboard Geography Exercises teach note names, distances and intervals for all the notes in 1st position. No Fear Shifting has students sailing effortlessly all the way to 8th position on their first day of shifting. Violin Fingerboard Geography, Volume 1, concludes with dozens of Practice Suggestions for pieces in the Suzuki® Violin School, Volumes 1-4, but can be used as a daily warm-up routine and complements perfectly any beginning violin method. The book includes 4 pull-out color-coded Finger Pattern charts.

    Excellent Starter Violin

I purchased this violin for my 7 year old son and 8 year old daughter so they could start learning to play. This violin comes with two identical bridges. Neither of them is installed, but if you center the bridge between the notches in the S's on the top of the violin, that is very close to where the music store would install it. The bridge is not a perfect upside-down "U", but rather slanted slightly. The peak of the bridge goes to the side with the thicker strings - looking at it from the base of the violin, it would be your left. Getting the violin in tune was a challenge, not because of the quality of the violin but rather because violins are just tough to tune initially. The fine tuners are very small but still do fine tuning. Before you use them, get it as close as you can to in-tune with the large tuners. The bow seems to be of good quality as well. It had some lumps in the hair at first but as I applied the rosin, they went away. You do have to apply a lot of rosin... 5/5 kah00na (Topeka, KS USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) I was a bit scared but..

I was searching for a violin for my 5 year old grand daughter's birthday. Her older brother started taking lessons in school and she wanted to play along with him. I read the reviews for this product and was a bit skeptical with the possibility of having to set it up. I'm not a violin player. My skill level is basically the same as the grandson I'm helping with lessons, maybe a bit more. I had a son take lessons many years ago so this wasn't my first go around with them.I have to say, I wasn't disappointed in this violin. It was just as described. I was a bit intimidated with having to set the bridge but I found a video online that showed how to do it and it was very easy. Since I have experience with tuning the violin, that wasn't an issue for me. I certainly can see if a person has never been around a violin how it could be very scary to see everything apart when it comes out of the box. In those cases I'd definitely recommend taking it to a professional for... 5/5 CarolMat - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) a good deal

This was just what we needed for our child they are learning the violin in school and we wanted to keep up on practicing over the summer. The price is good especially since we will need a bigger size soon, sounds good ,the rosin case is really hard to open ,but the case is nice and my daughter loves the color. we are happy with our purchase. 4/5 jandpolson - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Decent student instrument

I bought this violin to start my daughter on, and it's been perfectly serviceable. The natural wood and real horsehair bow were a pleasant surprise in an instrument with this price point, and the instrument itself exceeded my (admittedly low) expectations. I grew up a violinist, so I knew I would not be getting the highest quality instrument for this price, but for a child just starting to play, you want an instrument that you won't have weep over if it does happen to get dropped facedown on the floor, or if your child decides to move on to piano or flute instead. This violin fit the bill. It is well-enough put together to learn on, stay in tune, and have passable tone. The only problem I had was that the mass-produced bridge had to be filed down by a luthier to fit the strings properly, but that cost me less than $20 and made all the difference. The case was of higher quality than I expected and my daughter loves the backpack straps. Good starter package. 4/5 A. M. Great Violin

Initially I ordered a Violin that was too small and I thought it would be a hassle to get one my size but the person whom I purchased this Violin from gave me no trouble at all and was very helpful with everything. On top of that, the actual Violin is beautiful and plays spectacularly, I am very pleased with this purchase. 5/5 MusicMakesThePeople "Love" - See all my reviews This review is from: ViolinSmart 1/4 Student Violin Kit, Natural Initially I ordered a Violin that was too small and I thought it would be a hassle to get one my size but the person whom I purchased this Violin from gave me no trouble at all and was very helpful with everything. Good purchase

This is a really good, small violin for a child. I presented it to my 6 year old over a month ago, and it's still going strong. He loves it, and plays with it almost daily. This thing is quite durable also, and comes with a really cool case. I try to get good stuff for my boy, and I think this was well worth the money. 5/5 Andrew - See all my reviews = Durability:, July 21, 2011

    Great Beginners Violin

I purchased this violin for my daughter's first violin experience and I didn't want to spent a lot of money because I did not know yet whether or not she would take to the instrument...It was a very solid choice! It's made well and seems to hold up to the careful treatment of an 8 year old :) I think the sound quality is slightly better than what you would expect for the price (I have been told that all 1/4 size violins have some issues with sound quality simply because of the small size). The bow is very do-able for a beginner instrument and has been very durable - it's putting up with my daughter's somewhat rough rosining technique quite well! The tuning pegs hold a tune well (after a couple of weeks) and the fine tuners work well too. Also, it's a very pretty instrument - a fact that's helping my daughter want to practice.I was pleasantly surprised at how nice the case was for the price of this instrument. Good Violin

It is decently priced violin, I think.I don't know much of violin but was able to put the bridge and tune string using YouTube video instruction (there are many to watch and follow). I also ordered a new set of string and installed them by watching YouTube as well. It wasn't as difficult as it seems. There also was some website that give you sound of violin to tune with as well.If you can put together IKEA furniture, I think you can do all that is required for your kid to play the violin for the first time. The new string I bought was "Super Sensitive Red Label 2103 Violin String Set, 1/4" and I could see that these were much better string than what came with it.After rosining and tightening the bow, it made nice violin sound. My son says other kids' violin come with blanket to cover the violin in the case which didn't come with. We are just using one of our household towel. :) 5/5 Hotaek Na (Los Angeles, CA USA) - See all my reviews, September 27, 2011

I recieved this product and was missing the bow, they sent a new bow many, many weeks late and when they did get the bow to me it was the wrong size. I did not have the energy to keep going back and forth with this company to get the right bow. They also requested that I change/cancel my review many times. I think they had fine customer service, however there was something missing with the mistakes that happened. This is an excellent and very functional violin

I bought this violin for my 6 year old as a Christmas present. He has been asking for a violin for the past 4 months. I occasionally offer him my own instrument so he can saw away at it. He's not making music per se but I appreciate that he has a love for live sound. I decided his interest was genuine so he's going to get this violin. My own violin is an old French made JTL so I have something to compare against. This violin arrived as advertised. The case is a hard foam zip up unit with the usual top pocket and internal compartment. You would normally keep your instruction book in the top pocket but this pocket is too small for that. The internal compartment is adequate for something like rosin and a cloth. The violin comes with a set of strings, an extra bridge, two bows, a shoulder rest, and a rosin cake. Nothing was missing from what was advertised. The extra stings look like replacement steel strings. Although there's nothing special about them, it's still... 5/5 Boris Sheikman - See all my reviews, December 13, 2012

    Bows are very low quality.

Violin is reasonable quality for a child to practice on without a worry of being dropped or broken. Tuner is really handy, and extra set of strings also handy to have. Shoulder rest is good quality that can also fit even smaller violins. But with all that, I really never even seen this poor quality bows! Both are quirked and some hairs already been cut off. Even the cheap violin I ordered before just for decoration had a much better quality bow included. I will be placing pictures of these shortly here, so you can see for yourself. If you are considering this violin, you might want to order better bows separately. 3/5 E. Davydenko "Katya" (Los Alamos, NM USA) - See all my reviews, July 31, 2012

    Lovely little instrument

My grand daughter loves her violin, and we adults think it is very pretty. The instrument does not arrive "set up", but we were able to have a musician at a local music shop set it up for $10. Prices for this service may vary, so call for prices before you buy the violin if that additional cost is a concern for you. (Set up includes installing the bridge, which is not attached to the violin but is held in place by the strings; positioning the sound post, which is not attached but is inside the box and held in place by the top and bottom panels; rosining the bow, and tuning the violin.) In closing, may I just say that y'all don't know how difficult it was for me to call this a violin and not a fiddle. 5/5 flibbertigibbet - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Nice instrument for the price

I've been playing violin for 30 years and was happy to hear my first-grader ask for his own violin for Christmas. We're not ready to commit to an instrument rental yet. This violin is a great way to introduce him to the "real thing." It comes all strung up and complete with all the accessories needed -- just had to put the bridge on, tune it up, rosin the bow and we were set to play. It even comes with a sturdy case. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the instrument and the case, and by how promptly it was delivered. We're having a great time playing together! 5/5 Charlene P. I bought this as a birthday present for my child's friend

The violin is a bit hard to tune as the pegs are plastic and not ebony. Tone is fine and I think okay for a beginner. For the price, you can't really complain, but quality wise, would not recommend for my own child, since she is more experienced. For a real beginner (and a growing child), I think this is fine to start with. 3/5 sdress user - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Kun is still the best shoulder rest. The old prejudices against this type of violin hardware are dying. It saves your neck, it frees your hand and arm, and it doesn't really dampen the tone, notwithstanding the old generation's concerns. There are copies out there that are pretty close; but at this price, why bother looking for a sub? I usedKun for all of my kids. Kids are tender. You can't play well when you're in pain. 5/5 Fiddle-Faddle (Redlands, CA United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Kun Original 1/4 Violin Shoulder Rest (Misc. How can you not love everything miniature.

My daughter loves this. It is a great size. If you play the violin or viola you know that Kun is a great shoulder rest and you can't go wrong. I was nervous that this would end up being too large for her, but it has worked out great and gives her much more stability than a sponge. I feel like her posture has improved with it's use. 5/5 Erinboarder "erinboarder" (Lehi, UT) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) I've fallen in love with the violin all over again.

I've been playing the violin for almost nine years now, and I thought this would be a good present to myself for the amount of time I've spent on one thing, and I also got this because I've always wondered what it would be like to play an electric violin. I have a lot to say so I'll just lay it out into pros and cons (:Pros:-It's just like playing an electric guitar, but it's a violin. You can use all the amps and distorters you want, and it sounds absolutely awesome.-For the price, this is an excellent instrument. The strings are brand new, the finish on the violin is beautiful (I got mine in black metallic), and it has a great tone.-It's very lightweight. It and the case together weigh less than holding my oboe (whilst cased).-I received it within four-five days of buying it.-The case was much better than I expected. It's actually a hard case (I couldn't tell from the picture) and has a pocket for storing things on top of it and a... 5/5 Adriane Baklava - See all my reviews This review is from: Cecilio 4/4 CEVN-1NA Solid Wood Mahogany Metallic Electric / Silent Violin with Ebony Fittings in Style 1 (Full Size) (Electronics) I've been playing the violin for almost nine years now, and I thought this would be a good present to myself for the amount of time I've spent on one thing, and I also got this because I've always wondered what it would be like to play an electric violin. Such a beautiful instrument!

And it's not just the looks, this electric violin sounds surprisingly good when using headphones or amplifier. The bow is nice. It definitely needs a shoulder rest, some better rosin and a better set of strings, but for the price, this is wonderful. The line out jack does not seem to work (or I couldn't figure it out), but the phones jack works just fine for the amp. The price was even better after google'ing it ;) Nice as a gift to my dad. 5/5 master.aXu - See all my reviews This review is from: Cecilio 4/4 CEVN-1NA Solid Wood Mahogany Metallic Electric / Silent Violin with Ebony Fittings in Style 1 (Full Size) (Electronics) And it's not just the looks, this electric violin sounds surprisingly good when using headphones or amplifier. Not a bad practice instrument for the price

I bought this violin so I could practice quietly in my new apartment, since I have neighbors on both sides. It does the trick! I would never use it for performance, simply because the sound quality isn't awesome, but it is perfect or practicing. The headphones are absolute junk, so I don't use those, but I use my bose headphones. The strings understandably stretched quite a bit at first, so it was hard to keep it in tune, but after about 3 days, we were good to go with just minor adjustments. I like the fact that I can use my regular shoulder rest with it. My fingers did turn a little black from the fingerboard or strings at first, but that is minor and didn't last. Overall, I feel that I got quite a bargain, but again, it is perfect for practice but not at all a performance instrument. 4/5 nathanael - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Simple, cheap, sturdy

This shoulder rest works just fine, surprisingly well given its low pricepoint. Fits a 1/4 size student violin perfectly. Simple, seems sturdyenough, and functions just as well as a much more expensive one. 5/5 Cynthia Phillips (Redwood City, CA United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Just like a Kun for less

This rest is a great value. It is just like a Kun but cheaper. I swear it had to have been made in the same factory. The foam is nice and thick, and the rubber on the legs is good quality. I would definitely buy it again when we need to move up to a 1/2 size violin. 5/5 LuvsViola (Indianapolis, IN) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
