How tight to tighten a violin bow?

  • Jan 30, 2011 from goodfree
goodfree I have heard that when you play you are supposed to tighten so a regular pencil or your pinky can fit through the centermost gap. Is this reasonable?
Also, how loose are you supposed to keep it when you put it away?
thanks. youre right. i dont have a private teacher but Ive been playing for 7 years. its just that ive been told my bows starting to warp. so it doesnt matter how loose when i put it away?
yes, that about how tight you want it. just make sure its not 2 tight, its bad for the bow, and 2 loose will just make you sound sloppy and the bow will not play well. when you put

A violin bow for 1/3 the cost of a rehair job

I teach in a program that uses donated instruments for students who have not yet purchased a violin and was in need of bows for a couple fiddles. I looked at these somewhat skeptically because of the price but then went ahead and got a couple. These are amazing for the purchase price. They don't have a cheap feel to them and they work well. Probably you would need a better bow to perfect your flying spicatto, but for getting kids started and interested before parents have to shell out $$ they work great. The five stars are based on reasonable expectations for a very inexpensive bow. 5/5 Carolyn Osborne "co" (Ohio, USA) - See all my reviews, December 20, 2010

    A good starting bow

I got this bow about a month ago, and its a decent bow. It seemed to take me 10 times as much rosin as should have for it to play for some reason, could have been something with the hair... but other than that, it's been working good. The sound quality definitely depends on the quality of your instruments, so if your looking for high quality, buy a high quality bow. If you just want music of good enough quality for everything else, this pr\well for me. In conclusion, Beginners only. 4/5 KDG (Missouri, USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Would reccomend this bow to others.

I bought his bow a few days ago and it arrived within two days!! It is a pernambuco bow and I can visibly hear a difference in the tone that it makes vs my Brazilian wood bow! This bow resonates more and has a very warm tone to it. My violin teacher also said the same when I show her the bow in our lesson and she played with it. She will be recommending this to her students and so do I. It a very good bow for its price, I dont' think you can find another pernambuco bow at this price. Most of them on the market are close to a hundred if not more. The bow was not warped and is in very good condition, brand new. This bow is lighter than my brazilian wood bow and I love the warmth of the tone it makes! 5/5 Tzu H. Hsiao (VA USA) - See all my reviews, July 18, 2010

    Definitely recommend!

I ordered this bow for my son as a replacement, rather than having his current bow re-haired since the price was so reasonable. I have to say I am very impressed with the quality of this bow, in fact I am planning on ordering another as a back-up for myself! The weight feels balanced, and once rosined up, it produces a fine sound. I paid $300 for my current bow from a knowledgeable violinist (I am a 3-yr. adult violin student), and consider this bow comparable in every way. 5/5 Lisa K. I was looking for a "spare" bow that would do a better job than the crooked sticks I got with my cheaper instruments. It definitely does the job, as I've been using it as my primary bow lately. Good beginner's bow

I'm just a beginning fiddler, so I didn't want to invest too much in a bow. I know the choice of bow can make a big difference to a pro, but at my level anything that works is good enough. So I can't really say exactly how good this one is; I'm not the one to test a bow; but it seems to look and function fine. I'm sometimes reluctant to go with the cheapest available, but have not been disappointed in my choice this time. 5/5 Peaceful Okie (Norman, OK USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Very nice bow for the money!!!

After going into several music stores and finding ugly fiberglass bows with plastic frogs for sale for $50 or more, it was an extreme pleasure for me to find this bow on Amazon. It arrived in perfect condition. It was just as nice as any other bow I purchased for $100 20 years ago when I was a student. I recommend this to any beginning violinist (like my daughter, who really likes the bow) or as a second bow to any experienced violinist. My friend who is a professional violinist was impressed with the quality of this bow considering the cost, and she is recommending it to her students. 5/5 Stephanie Polster "Stephanie" - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) very cheap, but serviceable

by no means should someone intending to enter a competition buy this bow. However, for someone wanting to pick the fiddle back up after a number of years (like me) and not wanting to pay the lutheir $50 to re-hair the very high quality bow you already own- or a beginner- this is the PERFECT bow. super low quality, but super cheap. Obviously if you can afford $200 for an amazing bow it is worth every penny- but I wouldn't think twice about buying this bow for an extremely budget option. If you are even looking at a bow this price you should buy it and quit looking :-) 4/5 G- Money - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) I bought this bow due to my other one broke and the price was amazing a bow cost more just to be rehaired. the shiping was vary fast recieved my bow 2days after i placed the order. the bow is thinner then my other one what is no problem, but the only con i have is that the bow had acouple lil hairs sticking out at the end what i just took a plucked out so easly solved the problem. great buy would recomend. 4/5 The McLovin (Nonya, buis ness) - See all my reviews, April 24, 2012

    Love this bow

I purchased this, and one other budget friendly bow on amazon. I like them both, they were both lightweight, nicely balanced, and came in excellent condition.I had a fiberglass bow that came with my violin and that thing is heavy and I don't like the balance point. I also need to crank the tension on it quite a bit, whereas the two wood bows I just purchased I only need to tighten about half as much as the fiberglass. They sound fairly close to each other. That said, I'm a beginner and I'm still learning, but this particular bow, out of the 3 I now own, is my favorite so far. The balance point seems to be the best for my hands and it fits comfortably in the proper playing position without my feeling like I need to move my thumb or pinky too much. I'm able to control this bow better on the strings. The other two have less control, especially the fiberglass. Because it's so heavy and it doesn't like my hand, it goes all over the place. A great bow for the money, and it quickly replaced the one that came with my violin

I just took up the violin and purchased this bow to go with an antique violin I recently purchased. I had also purchased a brand new student violin that came with a bow. My teacher tried both and was so impressed with the quality that she suggested I leave the other in the case and just use it for a backup. Even though I'm a rank amateur and beginner, after using this bow and the one that came with my violin, I can easily tell the difference in quality of sound and ease of playing. Why? It's affordable. As a more experienced violinist, I'm quick to disparage the use of this rosin. It is low quality, and the bare minimum of what rosin should accomplish. way better than what was included with my violin

I am a complete newby when it comes to the violin. I purchased a violin online on a whim, that because it was so inexpensive if I give up well, at least I have something pretty to look at. With that in mind, my cheap violin came with even cheaper worthless rosin. It was hard as a rock, and I had to score the crap out of it just to get dust to go on my bow, and it would play for just a few strokes, then I had to vigorously reapply. I found this rosin at a music store and bought it. One easy application and I was FINALY making real violin noises. So for a newby that doesn't know all the details yet, this saved me. If it weren't for this rosin I might have just completely given up. I definately recommend to anybody who is a beginer. 5/5 A. Nelson (utah) - See all my reviews, March 30, 2007

    Works very well

I am a beginner violinist and I recently bought my first violin. The rosin that was included with my violin purchase is of very poor quality. Thankfully, I had decided to order this rosin from amazon also as a precaution. It works much better than what was shipped with my violin and not much has to be applied in order for the bow to grasp the strings. It's also very inexpensive. You really can't beat the price. I'm sure it's probably worthwhile to purchase an even higher grade rosin if you're an advanced violinist, but for anyone at the beginner or intermediate stage, this will work very well. 5/5 Jesse - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great Value, great seller

I purchased this bow for my 9 year old daughter who has been playing for about 1 1/2 years. I looked locally and they were 4 times the price. I took a chance on this one, with the price, what did I have to loose. we received the bow very quickly and packaged great. My daughter took it to her lesson that week and the instructor (she has played professionally for 20 years, studied fiddle in Ireland) was very impressed with the quality of the bow. Highly recommend this for to go with your half size violin. 5/5 Brooke - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) It arrived, not warped and works

If I could only get my 7yr old to practice once in a while.... the old bow warped, I had hoped this would be lighter but it was about the same weight as the old bow. Good Bow

Just as described. We wanted to go a step up from the cheaper bows. I don't personally play but they are for my kids. No complaints. I would buy again. 5/5 Brett - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: High-quality Brazil Violin Bow, Size 1/2 Just as described. Nice bow

Bought this for my son who is in a High School Orchestra, he really likes it. My Daughter has a Violin Tutor and the Tutor thought that this bow was quite good especially for this price. 5/5 Terry A.
